BALTIMORE, Md. (Sept. 20, 2016) – Although the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team didn't get the result it wanted here Wednesday, its stellar effort gave nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins University much more of a struggle than the Blue Jays expected.
Rutgers-Camden rallied from a two-goal halftime deficit and forced the Blue Jays into overtime before Johns Hopkins sophomore forward
Kristen Hori (Honolulu, HI/Iolani School) scored the deciding goal 3:05 into the first OT session. Hori's goal gave the Blue Jays, ranked No. 19 in the latest
D3soccer.com Top 25 poll, a 3-2 victory.
Johns Hopkins improves to 4-1-2. Rutgers-Camden falls to 3-2-2, snapping a five-game unbeaten streak (3-0-2) which started after an opening-day loss to No. 12 Swarthmore College.
The Blue Jays notched the deciding goal when senior midfielder
Meg Van de Loo (Eau Claire, WI/Memorial) dribbled up the far side and slotted a ball into the opposite left side of the box, where Hori finished the game with a 15-yard shot. The goal spoiled a terrific comeback by Rutgers-Camden, which fell into a 2-0 halftime hole and was out-shot, 14-0, in the opening 45 minutes.
Johns Hopkins scored at 13:48 when junior forward
Bailey Monaco (South Salem, NY/John Jay) scored her first goal of the season after a one-on-one with Raptor junior goalie
Katie Gurba (Westampton, NJ/Holy Cross). Monaco was sprung on a long pass from the left side by sophomore defender
Kyla Persky (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan). In the 25th minute, the home team added another goal when Van de Loo scored her sixth goal, assisted by Monaco, barely beating Gurba to a ball at the top of the box.
The Raptors cut into the lead only 2:25 into the second half on their second shot of the half and the game. With Johns Hopkins junior goalie
Bess Kitzmiller (Wilsonville, OR/Wilsonville) charging out of the net, Raptor junior forward
Catherine Fiore (Collingswood, NJ/Paul VI) shot off the sliding goalie into the wide open net. Her 20-yard shot produced her second goal of the season.
With 18:15 remaining in regulation, Fiore struck again to tie the game. She scored from 20 yards out again, assisted by freshman midfielder
Sarah Zuzulock (National Park, NJ/Gateway Regional). Fiore's two goals raised her career output to 20, one shy of seventh place on the program's all-time list (Rachel Greenwald, 2002-04). Her four points lifted her to 49 for her career, leapfrogging her over Nicole Lauri (46 from 2000-03) and into ninth place on the Rutgers-Camden program list.
Johns Hopkins finished with a 25-6 advantage in shots and a 6-0 lead in corner kicks. Gurba finished with seven saves, hiking her career total to 137 to tie for fifth place on the all-time list with Tracy Stonaker (2003-04). Kitzmiller had two saves for the Blue Jays.
Rutgers-Camden returns to New Jersey Athletic Conference action with another tough test Saturday at 1 p.m. The Scarlet Raptors host Montclair State University, which is ranked No. 25 in the
