CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 11, 2017) – For a good portion of Wednesday's New Jersey Athletic Conference game, the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team was able to keep the high-powered Rowan University offense in check and rally to forge a 1-1 tie.
In a four-minute span late in the second half, however, the nationally-ranked Profs struck for two goals – a go-ahead tally by junior forward
Shane Doherty (Delran, NJ/Delran) and an insurance tally assisted by Doherty – as Rowan hung on to defeat Rutgers-Camden, 3-2.
Rowan, which is ranked No. 6 nationally in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III poll and No. 14 in the
D3soccer.com Top 25 poll, improves to 13-2 overall and 6-0 in the NJAC, running its winning streak to eight games. It was the Profs' third win at Rutgers-Camden Community Park this season after capturing two games to win the championship of the Cialella Soccer Classic in early September.
Rutgers-Camden saw its unbeaten streak snapped at five games (3-0-2). The Scarlet Raptors fell to 6-6-3 overall and 2-3-1 in the NJAC.
Rowan, which entered the game outscoring opponents, 54-15, through its first 14 contests, held a 13-3 advantage in shots during the opening half, while grabbing a 1-0 lead. The Profs scored at 24:52 when sophomore back
Ryan Logar (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) fed junior forward
Ryan Campbell (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) on the left side of the box. Campbell tucked his 10th goal of the season inside the left post.
Only 1:52 into the second half, the Scarlet Raptors tied the game off a long throw-in from senior forward
Shane Guyer (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton). Guyer's throw from the left touchline into the goal mouth nicked off Rowan junior keeper
Kyle Dennis (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) and into the net for his second goal of the year.
The game remained tied until the 78th minute, when a Rowan shot was saved by Raptor junior keeper
James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) and bounded to Doherty for the easy score off the rebound. It was his team-leading 11th goal of the year.
The Profs struck again in the 82nd minute when Doherty fed sophomore forward
Matt Hendrickson (Sewell, NJ/Clearview Regional) for his eighth goal of the season, a shot inside the left post.
Rutgers-Camden cut its deficit to one goal with 1:19 remaining, aided by another long Guyer throw-in. The throw into the box was finished by a header from junior back
