UNION, N.J. (Oct. 14, 2017) – Junior midfielder
Erick Reyes (Summit, NJ/Summit) scored two goals, including the game winner 3:06 into the first overtime, to rally the Kean University men's soccer team over Rutgers University-Camden, 2-1, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday.
The victory was the fourth straight for Kean, which improves to 8-5-1 overall and 3-4 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Camden falls to 6-7-3 overall and 2-4-1 in the conference.
The win was only the second for Kean in its last seven games against the Scarlet Raptors, although the Cougars now lead the all-time series, 30-15-1.
Reyes notched his winning goal on the only shot of overtime as he took a cross from sophomore midfielder
Antoine Gbamou (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) and beat Raptor junior goalie
James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) one-on-one. It was the seventh goal of the season for Reyes.
Rutgers-Camden scored the game's first goal at 21:03 when junior back
Darnell Brown (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) scored his third goal of the season off a free kick by junior midfielder
Vincenzo Masitti (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt). Brown,
pictured above, tucked his shot inside the far post.
Kean knotted the score only 1:57 before halftime when Reyes scored off a feed from freshman forward
Vinceroy Nelson (St. Mary's Cayon, St. Kitts/Cayon).
Rutgers-Camden finished with a 13-11 edge in shots, including a 9-4 margin in the first half. Kean had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks, including 4-1 in the second half.
Brett finished with three saves for the Scarlet Raptors. Cougars junior keeper
Derek Phells (Avenel, NJ/Colonia) made four saves.
Rutgers-Camden plays a 7 p.m. non-conference game at Swarthmore College Monday.
