Raptors miss NJAC berth with 1-0 loss at Stockton

Box Score

GALLOWAY, N.J. (Oct. 25, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team needed a win or a tie in its final New Jersey Athletic Conference game of the season to qualify for the NJAC playoffs.

The Raptors didn't get either as they fell to Stockton University, 1-0, falling just short of their first NJAC berth since 2007.

Rutgers-Camden closes its season at 7-9 overall and 3-6 in the NJAC, finishing seventh in the conference standings. The Raptors totaled nine NJAC points, the same number as Rutgers-Newark, but the Scarlet Raiders earned the last playoff spot by virtue of a tie-breaker, their 2-0 win over the Scarlet Raptors in Camden on Sept. 16.

Stockton improves to 9-10-1 overall and 4-5 in the NJAC, earning the fifth seed for the conference playoffs, which begin Saturday.

Stockton's victory increased its lead in the all-time series against Rutgers-Camden to 16-1-3. The Ospreys are 13-0-2 against the Raptors since the lone Rutgers-Camden win in the series, which came in 2003.

In a defensive game that remained scoreless into the second half, the lone goal came on a 30-yard free kick by sophomore back Michelle Sander (Ewing, NJ/Notre Dame), which slipped through the hands of Raptor senior keeper Katie Gurba (Westampton, NJ/Holy Cross).

Stockton finished with a 16-5 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Senior midfielder Kaitlyn Ennis (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington), pictured above, had two of the Raptors' five shots, while sophomore midfielder Sarah Zuzulock (National Park, NJ/Gateway Regional) and freshman forward Meghan Wachira (Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro North) had the lone shots on goal.

Gurba made five saves, while Osprey junior keeper Nicole Pallante (Brick, NJ/Brick Township) had two saves.

Gurba finished her four-year Raptor career as the program's all-time leader in goalie minutes (4,342:30), shots faced (702) and shutouts (13), while ranking second in saves (271) and tied for second in goalie wins (16) and ties (5).
