CAMDEN, N.J. (Dec. 6, 2017) – The Stockton University men's basketball team outscored Rutgers University-Camden, 24-16, over the final 5:52 of the second half to spoil a fine Scarlet Raptor comeback and break open a tie game, and the Ospreys went on to post an 85-77 victory in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday night.
The victory lifts Stockton to 5-4 overall and 1-3 in the NJAC, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 1-6 and 0-4.
Stockton has won its last 19 games and 65 of its last 66 against Rutgers-Camden. The Ospreys hold a 73-8 lead in the all-time series.
Stockton took a 38-33 halftime lead and increased its lead to nine points (44-35) early in the second half before the Scarlet Raptors started whittling away at the margin. Rutgers-Camden finally tied the game at 57-57 on a foul shot by freshman guard
Ian McCarthy (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) with 8:16 remaining and the teams were tied at 59-59 and 61-61 before the Ospreys pulled ahead to stay. The last tie was forged on a pair of foul shots by junior guard
Anthony Harris (Philadelphia, PA/Philadelphia Electrical & Technology), who had a stellar contest with a game-high 30 points.
Stockton broke the tie on a layup by junior guard
Kashaun Barnes (Toms River, NJ/Manchester Township) and the closest the Scarlet Raptors came after that was one point, 65-64, following a trey by Harris. Over the last four minutes, the Ospreys made 12 foul shots – six by Barnes, who went 6-for-7 from the line on his way to a team-high 19 points. Stockton stretched its lead to as many as 10 points (83-73 and 85-75) late in the game.
In addition to Barnes' offense, the Ospreys received double-doubles from both sophomore forward
Steve Ferebee (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) and senior forward
Marcus Harmon (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Township). Ferebee finished with 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while Harmon had 12 points and 11 boards. Stockton held a 44-29 advantage off the boards.
Junior guard
Onnir Kendall (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added 15 points for the Ospreys.
Harris went 9-for-17 from the floor, including 4-for-11 from three-point range, and shot 8-for-12 from the foul line on the way to his 30-point night for the Scarlet Raptors. Senior guard
Marcus Taylor (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) added 13 points, while both freshman guard
John Herndon (Philadelphia, PA/West Catholic Prep) and junior forward
Isaac Destin (Woodlynne, NJ/Collingswood) both added nine. McCarthy canned eight points.
Destin also finished with nine rebounds, while Taylor added seven. Herndon added a game-high four assists.
Rutgers-Camden shot 23-for-51 from the floor (45.1 percent), while Stockton was 27-for-63 (42.9). The Ospreys, however, had their huge advantage off the boards, including 19 offensive rebounds.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday with an 8 p.m. NJAC game at Rutgers-Newark.
