NEWARK, N.J. (Dec. 9, 2017) – Junior guard
Tyler Ofray (Newark, NJ/Church Farm School) collected 21 points to lead eight players in the scoring column as the Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team outlasted Rutgers-Camden, 70-63, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday night.
Newark improves to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the NJAC, snapping a four-game losing streak. Rutgers-Camden falls to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in the conference with its fifth straight loss. The Scarlet Raiders have won their last five games and eight of their last nine against the Scarlet Raptors and hold a 50-35 lead in the all-time series.
Rutgers-Camden raced out of the gate, building a quick 12-3 lead in the opening half before the Scarlet Raiders went on an 18-3 run, including 10 straight points, to forge ahead, 21-15. The Scarlet Raptors answered with three straight treys – two by junior guard
Juan Perez-Jones (Trenton, NJ/Pennsbury) and one by freshman guard
Chris Rodriguez (Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester City) to grab back the lead at 24-21. By the end of the half, the teams had changed leads six times and been tied on three other occasions, with the Scarlet Raptors holding a 33-32 edge.
The second half brought three more early lead changes, with Newark finally taking the lead for good, 37-35, on a three-pointer by senior guard
Emmanuel Kema (Union, NJ/Union). The Scarlet Raiders opened up a 47-40 advantage before Rutgers-Camden cut its deficit to one point, at 53-52. Newark scored eight of the next nine points, sparked by a three-pointer from sophomore guard
Chase Barneys (Woodbridge, NJ/Colonia).
Barneys finished with 11 points and a game-high six assists for the winners, while Ofray added five assists to his team-high 21 points. Freshman guard
John Herrin (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township) added 10 points for Rutgers-Newark.
Junior guard
Anthony Harris (Philadelphia, PA/Philadelphia Electrical & Technology) notched a game-high 22 points for Rutgers-Camden, while senior guard
Marcus Taylor (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling), pictured above, had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Perez-Jones added 11 points.
Junior forward
Isaac Destin (Woodlynne, NJ/Collingswood) notched a career-high 14 rebounds and added three blocks for the Scarlet Raptors.
Rutgers-Camden shot 19-for-57 (33.3 percent) from the floor, while Newark shot 25-for-62 (40.3). The Scarlet Raiders held a 44-41 edge off the boards.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Monday with a 7 p.m. non-conference home game against City College of New York.
