NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 14, 2017) – After playing only 3-1/2 innings in the previous two days due to rainouts, the Rutgers University-Camden softball team finally had a chance to see game action here Tuesday at the FastPitch Dreams Spring Classic.
 
In a rain-delayed game that was pushed back from its scheduled 9:30 a.m. start to 11:30 a.m., the Scarlet Raptors dropped a 5-0 decision against Gettysburg College before losing 7-1 against the College of Mount Saint Vincent. The two losses leave Rutgers-Camden with a 4-4 record.
 
During Monday's rainy game against Wisconsin-Stout, the Scarlet Raptors held an 8-1 lead with the Blue Devils coming to bat in the bottom of the fourth inning. The game was suspended at that point, with rain pouring down and the field a quagmire. The teams will complete that game before the start of their scheduled 1:30 p.m. contest Friday at the FastPitch Dreams Spring Classic.
 
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Wednesday facing Sarah Lawrence College at 9:30 a.m. and Lycoming College at 11:30 a.m.
   
In the opening game, Gettysburg (5-2) junior pitcher Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, NY/St. Anthony's) shut down the Scarlet Raptors on six hits, getting five of her seven strikeouts among the first six batters of the game. She had a perfect game going until senior centerfielder Megan Goodspeed (Florence, NJ/Florence) had a bunt single with two outs in the third inning.
 
The lone Raptor with two hits was junior third baseman Gabby Pfeiffer (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley), who followed Goodspeed with a bunt single in the third and added a single in the seventh.
 
The Bullets scored all the runs Reilly needed with a two-run third inning, sparked by a hit batsman and a sacrifice. A single and an error put two runners in scoring position and senior shortstop Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, MD/Elizabeth Seton) delivered a two-run single.
 
Gettysburg added single runs in the fourth and seventh innings.
 
Freshman rightfielder Taylor Doi (Foster City, CA/San Mateo) added a pair of hits, including an RBI single in the fourth, for the Bullets. Freshman catcher Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, PA/Villa Maria Academy) also had two hits, while junior first baseman Stephanie Leonardo (East Haddam, CT/Choate Rosemary Hall) had a run-scoring single in the seventh.
   
In the nightcap, the Scarlet Raptors took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a leadoff single by junior leftfielder Gabrielle Castellini (Millville, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) and an eventual RBI single by sophomore pitcher Dannie Dinsfriend (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee).
 
The Dolphins took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the third on four hits, including a two-run double by the winning pitcher, junior Rachel Heizer (Vacaville, CA/Vacaville). Heizer went 4-for-4 at the plate, with two doubles, and knocked in five of her team's seven runs.
 
Senior Mackenzie Heizer (Vacaville, CA/Vacaville), who played first base, supported her sister's pitching by going 4-for-4 with three runs and one RBI.
 
On the mound, Rachel Heizer scattered seven hits, including two by Castellini. She walked one and struck out six to earn her first decision of the season for the 2-1 Dolphins.
