CENTER VALLEY, Penn. (April 11, 2017) – The DeSales University baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to overcome a two-run deficit and held on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 5-4, in a non-conference game here Tuesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs improve to 12-11. The Scarlet Raptors fall to 10-13 with their fifth straight loss.
After Rutgers-Camden tacked on a run in the top of the eighth on a RBI double by senior leftfielder
Doug Carter Jr. (Union, NJ/Union) to take a 4-2 lead. DeSales collected five hits in the bottom of the inning to rally for the victory. A two-run single by junior rightfielder
Conner Lafferty (Langhorne, PA/Notre Dame) tied the game. Moments later, freshman first baseman
Sergio Diaz (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) stroked a run-scoring single to plate the eventual winning run.
The Scarlet Raptors struck for two runs in the top of the first inning, sparked by a leadoff double from sophomore second baseman
Chris Jones (Washington Township, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep). One out later, freshman third baseman
Matthew Stoots (Browns Mills, NJ/Pemberton) unloaded his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot to left field.
DeSales tied the game in the bottom of the frame with two unearned runs off Raptor freshman starter
Jaylen Paula (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep), but Rutgers-Camden regained the lead in the second inning. Freshman designated hitter
Matt Yanick (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) unloaded a leadoff homer to left center, his second collegiate home run.
Paula ended up working five innings for the Scarlet Raptors, allowing six hits, two walks and the two unearned runs. He struck out four. Sophomore
Steven Bloyed (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) worked 2.2 innings, allowing four hits, one walk and three earned runs, taking the loss. Bloyed (3-2) struck out one.
Junior
Konner Schneider (Bedminster, NJ/Bernards), the third of four DeSales pitchers, picked up the win for his first decision of the year despite allowing the Raptor run in the top of the eighth inning. Senior
Tyler Cooperman (Allentown, PA/Salisbury) collected his third save with a scoreless ninth, despite allowing a leadoff single to Yanick.
Jones, Stoots and Yanick all collected two hits for the Scarlet Raptors, whose only other hit was the double by Carter.
DeSales' 12-hit attack was led by three hits apiece from junior leftfielder
Hunter Hart (Reading, PA/Exeter) and senior catcher
Mike Kacergis (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge).
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Thursday when it opens a key home-and-home New Jersey Athletic Conference series with Rowan University, hosting the Profs at 3:30 p.m. The Scarlet Raptors travel to Rowan on Friday for another 3:30 p.m. NJAC game.
