CAMDEN, N.J. (April 20, 2017) –With the Rutgers University-Camden baseball team in a serious slide, the Scarlet Raptors desperately needed someone to step up and put an end to their losing streak here Thursday.
Sophomore
Ian Scheidemann (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) proved to be that man. Scheidemann hurled the Raptors' first complete game of the season and Rutgers-Camden backed him with a 11-hit attack as the team defeated Stockton University, 9-1, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game.
The victory snapped the Raptors' 10-game losing streak, their longest since 11 straight losses from April 5-19, 2008. It also snapped a nine-game NJAC skid for the Raptors, who hadn't won in conference play since the first game of their NJAC-opening doubleheader at William Paterson University April 2. The Raptors' last overall win was an 8-7, 11-inning non-conference victory over Neumann University April 4.
Scheidemann scattered eight hits, allowed only one earned run and didn't walk any batters in his performance. He struck out five to raise his record to 3-2. Two of those victories are the Raptors' only wins in the NJAC, where they improve to 2-9. Rutgers-Camden is 11-18 overall.
Stockton, meanwhile, falls to 12-15 overall and 4-7 in conference play.
Rutgers-Camden scored the only runs Scheidemann needed with two in the bottom of the first inning off Stockton starter and losing pitcher
Ray Hughes (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township), who falls to 2-3. Freshman centerfielder
John Tedeschi (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) opened the Raptor frame with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. He reached third base on a bunt single by senior rightfielder
Zach Ellin (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee). After Ellin moved up on a wild pitch, senior catcher
Jon Theckston (Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, plating Tedeschi and tying the Rutgers-Camden career mark in the process. His 11th sacrifice fly tied him with Matt Calloway (2003-06) and Jon Hydock (2009-12) for the most in program history.
Ellin, who advanced to third on Theckston's sacrifice fly, scored on a ground out by sophomore second baseman
Chris Jones (Washington Township, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep).
The Scarlet Raptors added an unearned run in the third inning when Tedeschi reached on an infield throwing error and eventually scored on a RBI single by Jones. In the fifth, Jones was hit by a pitch with two outs, stole second and scored on a single by senior leftfielder
Doug Carter Jr. (Union, NJ/Union).
Stockton scored its lone run in the sixth inning off Scheidemann, collecting a pair of hits and a RBI ground out, but Rutgers-Camden plated five runs over the seventh and eighth innings to blow open the close game. Tedeschi led off the three-run seventh with a double and scored when Ellin went all the way to second base on an infield throwing error. Theckston singled home Ellin, advanced on a wild pitch and an infield out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Carter. Theckston's single gave him another career milestone, marking his 200th total base at Rutgers-Camden. He became only the 10th player in program history to reach that total, tying him for ninth place on the all-time list with Mike Morris (2004-07).
In the eighth inning, freshman third baseman
Tyler Travis (Berlin, NJ/Eastern Regional) opened the frame with a single. He advanced on an errant pickoff attempt, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Tedeschi. Ellin singled Tedeschi to third and he scored on a ground out by Theckston.
Ellin went 3-for-5 with two runs scored to pace the Raptors' attack. Tedeschi went 2-for-4 (both doubles) with one RBI and four runs scored from the leadoff spot, while Theckston had three RBIs. Carter went 2-for-2 and joined Jones with a pair of RBIs. Carter also stole two bases.
The Ospreys received 2-for-4 games from junior catcher
Antonio Morello (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township) and freshman designated hitter
Garrhet Reedy (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth). Reedy had the team's lone RBI on a sixth-inning ground out.
The Scarlet Raptors visit Stockton University Friday in the back end of the home-and-home NJAC series. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
