Box Score
CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 1, 2017) – Sophomore forward
Lydia Lawson (Mountain Top, PA/Holy Redeemer) scored a goal in each half to power the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team over Rutgers University-Camden, 3-0, in the season opener for both programs here Friday.
On a night where new Head Coach
Steve Weaver made his Rutgers-Camden debut and senior keeper
Katie Gurba (Westampton, NJ/Holy Cross) set a program record for career minutes played by a goalie, the Blue Jays out-shot the Scarlet Raptors, 20-5, and held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Lawson scored the only goal Elizabethtown needed only 2:52 into the contest after taking a through ball to the right side of the box from freshman midfielder
Alli Lasky (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson). Lawson finished with a shot across the goal into the left side.
Despite their 8-2 advantage in shots over the opening 45 minutes, the Blue Jays produced only that early goal. Early in the second half, however, they made it a 2-0 game following a corner kick by Lasky. She sent the ball from the left corner into the box, where it was passed to the right side by junior forward
Shannon Conlon (Belcamp, MD/Harford Technical). Sophomore forward
Kristin Wilkinson (Wilton, CT/North Penn, PA) finished off the play with a high shot into the net.
Lawson added her second goal of the night with 16:14 remaining, scoring on a high looping shot from inside the box.
Gurba finished with nine saves while playing the entire 90 minutes. She hiked her career total to 3,579:18 in goal, passing the old program mark of 3,498 minutes held by Kristen Stewart (1998-01). Her nine saves also moved her career total over the 200 plateau to 207, 16 shy of tying for third on the program's career list.
Senior goalie
Hailey Parks (Brodheadsville, PA/Pleasant Valley) notched two saves to earn the shutout for the Blue Jays. She faced only five shots, two of them by Raptor sophomore midfielder
Kacie Walton (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington). Walton and junior back
Lexis Evans (Magnolia, NJ/Sterling) had the two Raptor shots on goal.
Rutgers-Camden hosts Widener University in a 7 p.m. game Wednesday.
