MAHWAH, N.J. (Sept. 30, 2017) –
Meghan Wachira (Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro North) has proven to be a potent offensive force in her short time at Rutgers University-Camden, and the freshman forward made the difference again Saturday in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game at Ramapo College.
Wachira scored a pair of first-half goals to rally the Scarlet Raptors past the Roadrunners, 2-1, for their first NJAC win of the season.
Rutgers-Camden improves to 4-6 overall and 1-3 in the conference, snapping a four-game losing streak. It was the Scarlet Raptors' first win at Ramapo since a 2-0 victory in 2011 and raised Rutgers-Camden's lead in the all-time series to 10-7-2.
Wachira owns all four of the Scarlet Raptors' game-winning goals, one shy of the program's single-season record set by Heather Greenwald in 2003.
Ramapo scored the game's first goal at 12:38 when junior forward
Gabrielle Gentilucci (Byram, NJ/Lenape Valley) collected her second goal of the season. She was assisted by senior midfielder
Nani Vizcaino (Lodi, NJ/Lodi).
It didn't take Rutgers-Camden long to tie the game. Only 1:33 later, Wachira ripped a shot past Ramapo sophomore goalkeeper
Elizabeth Harvell (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) for her seventh goal of the season. Six minutes later, the Scarlet Raptors were awarded a penalty kick and Wachira converted with her eighth tally of the season. Wachira's eight goals are the most at Rutgers-Camden since Samantha Sharp scored 10 in 2010.
Senior goalie
Katie Gurba (Westampton, NJ/Holy Cross) collected two saves to earn her first win of the season and the 14th of her record-setting Raptor career. Her 14 wins tied her for fourth place on the program's all-time list with Therese Comella (2004-05) and Tracy Stonaker (2003-04). She hiked her career saves to 226 (third on the career list) and her shots faced to 610 (second), while raising her program record for goalie minutes to 3,873:14.
Harvell made 10 saves for the Roadrunners as Rutgers-Camden outshot Ramapo, 13-10, and put 12 of those shots on goal. The Raptors also held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday with a non-conference game at Lancaster Bible College, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
