Mark Thomas (Newark, NJ/Marist) had a double-double of 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while adding a game-high seven assists, and sophomore guard
Chase Barneys (Woodbridge, NJ/Colonia) notched a game-high 16 points to lead the Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team over Rutgers University-Camden, 66-56, in New Jersey Athletic Conference action here Saturday afternoon.
Rutgers-Newark improves to 8-11 overall and 4-9 in the NJAC, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 3-16 overall and 1-12 in the conference. The Scarlet Raiders, who have won their last six games against the Scarlet Raptors, lead the all-time series, 51-35.
Newark scored the game's first nine points, but by halftime, Camden had rallied back to take a 34-33 lead. The game was tied five times in the second half, the last at 52-52 on a layup by Thomas, who proceeded to add a foul shot that put the Scarlet Raiders ahead for good, 53-52. That three-point play kicked off a 14-1 run for Rutgers-Newark, which included four points from senior guard
Erick Loften-Harris (Brooklyn, NY/Union), that gave the Scarlet Raiders the lead for good, 64-53.
In addition to the big game by Thomas and the offensive production from Barneys, Loften-Harris added 12 points and eight boards for the Scarlet Raiders, while freshman guard
Quincy Rutherford (Harrison, NJ/Eastern Christian) notched nine points.
Rutgers-Camden received 15 points apiece from senior guard
Marcus Taylor (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling), pictured above, and junior guard
Anthony Harris (Philadelphia, PA/Philadelphia Electrical & Technology). A pair of freshman guards,
Terrance Harris (Burlington Township, NJ/Camden Catholic) and
John Herndon (Philadelphia, PA/West Catholic Prep), added nine and seven points, respectively.
Newark shot 25-for-48 (52.1 percent) from the field, while Rutgers-Camden shot 21-for-52 (40.4). The Scarlet Raiders held a 37-21 advantage off the boards and also made five more turnovers (19-14) than the Scarlet Raptors.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday with an 8 p.m. NJAC game at Stockton University.
