UNION, N.J. (Jan. 6, 2018) – The Kean University men's basketball team outscored Rutgers University-Camden, 22-10, to end the first half and went on an 11-4 run to start the second half as the Cougars defeated the Scarlet Raptors, 92-78, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday afternoon.
Kean improves to 4-9 overall and 2-5 in the NJAC, snapping a three-game losing streak. Rutgers-Camden, which has lost four straight games, falls to 2-11 overall and 0-7 in NJAC play.
Kean leads the all-time series, 57-24.
The lead changed hands three times in the opening half, with the Cougars going on a 22-10 run to end the half and take a 43-32 lead at the break. Kean went ahead, 23-22, with 8:46 left in the half on a layup by junior forward
Micah Kerr (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) to begin a seven-point run. Junior forward
Michael Summerer (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) added the last five points of the run.
After Rutgers-Camden cut its deficit to 30-29, the Cougars scored the next six points and 10 of the next 11, with five coming off the hands of sophomore guard
Stephen Strom (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge).
By halftime, freshman guard
Adrian Baucum (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) had 11 points for Kean, while Strom had eight. For Rutgers-Camden, junior guard
Anthony Harris (Philadelphia, PA/Philadelphia Electrical & Technology) had 12 of the Raptors' 32 points.
Kean's 11-4 run to open the second half included six points – on a pair of treys – by Baucum.
The Cougars placed six players in double figures to offset a monstrous double-double by Raptors junior forward
Isaac Destin (Woodlynne, NJ/Collingswood). In collecting his eighth career double-double, Destin,
pictured above, had game-high totals of 13 rebounds and a career-high 32 points. His old career scoring high of 26 points came against the City College of New York on Dec. 11 of this season.
Destin's performance was the second 30-point game by a Raptor this season. Harris scored 30 against Stockton University on Dec. 6. Destin went 14-for-16 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the foul line as he produced the most points by a Raptor in one game since Wyatt Polk notched 33 against New York University on March 4, 2015.
Kean's firepower, however, was spread up and down the roster as Baucum finished with 19 points and junior guard
DeAndre Thomas (Reston, VA/Herndon) added 16. Strom scored 13 points, junior guard
Keenan Williams Jr. (Paulsboro, NJ/Paulsboro) collected 11 points and both Kerr and junior guard
Justin Watson (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) added 10 markers.
Strom finished with a team-high six rebounds and added seven points. Williams dished off a game-high eight assists, while Watson led all players with four steals.
In addition to Destin's big game, the Raptors had another huge performance by Harris, who scored 19 points, added five rebounds and collected a team- high seven assists, setting his Raptor career high.
Freshman guard
John Herndon (Philadelphia, PA/West Catholic Prep) added 10 points, three assists, two rebounds and a team-high three steals for Rutgers-Camden. His three steals set a career-high for the rookie.
Although Rutgers-Camden held a 37-30 advantage off the boards, the Raptors also had seven more turnovers than the Cougars (19-12). Kean shot 35-for-69 (50.7 percent) from the floor and Rutgers-Camden shot 29-for-59 (49.2). The Cougars made five more three-pointers (13-8) than the Scarlet Raptors.
Rutgers-Camden returns to NJAC play Wednesday when it hosts Montclair State University at 8 p.m.
