CAMDEN, N.J. (Nov. 10, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Camden placed six players in double figures as it defeated Gallaudet University, 81-74, in the season opener for both teams here Saturday afternoon.
The Scarlet Raptors took the lead for good at 7-6 on a jumper by senior
Ariel Robinson and stretched their lead to as many as 19 points (73-54) midway through the final quarter before the Bison cut the margin to single digits.
Senior captain
Gabby Greene led the way with 17 points and three steals for the Scarlet Raptors, while junior
Fatimah Williams netted 15 points. Robinson finished with 14 points and barely missed a double-double, grabbing nine rebounds, while sophomore
Jordan Harbaugh and freshman
Wykira Johnson-Kelly both added 11 points. Sophomore
Shane Holmes added 10 points for Rutgers-Camden.
Freshman
Tamara Johnson tied Robinson and Gallaudet's Hannah Neild with game-high honors off the boards, grabbing nine rebounds.
Neild finished as the game's top scorer, pouring in 23 points, including 7-for-7 shooting from the foul line. Her Gallaudet teammates Emelia Beldon and Sabina Shysh added 15 and 14 points, respectively. Beldon also collected a game-high four steals.
Camden shot 29-for-67 from the field (43.3 percent), while Gallaudet went 27-for-61 (44.3). Both teams made 14 foul shots, with the Raptors going 14-for-16 and the Bison going 14-for-19 from the line. Williams went 7-for-8 from the foul line for Rutgers-Camden, while Green was a perfect 6-for-6.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Tuesday with a 6 p.m. home game against Penn State-Schuylkill.
