STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (Dec. 7, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Camden indoor track teams continued their early-season assault on the school record books as they competed at the Wagner College Seahawk Shootout Friday at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
One week after the Scarlet Raptors set four men's program marks in their season opener, the men set three more and the women added a pair of school records on Friday.
Seniors
Alexis Jones and
Cameron Dobbins were involved in a pair of records each, setting an individual mark and running on record-setting sprint medley relay teams.
Jones,
pictured above, who is closing out her collegiate track eligibility this winter, turned in a memorable performance as she ran a 3:14.56 clocking to finish third of 12 Division III athletes in the 1,000-meter run, breaking the program mark of 3:21.61 set by Robin England on Jan. 23, 2009 at the Collegeville Classic. Jones also finished first of five in the mile (5:22.52) and was part of the Raptors' record-setting spring medley team, which finished third of eight in a time of 4:43.41, breaking a mark of 4:47.52 set at the same Wagner Shootout on Dec. 9, 2016. Teaming with Jones on the relay squad were freshmen
Kirstin Slater and
Tathiana Henry, along with senior
Erica Gilmore.
Dobbins didn't waste any time in shattering the 300-meter dash mark that he set on Dec. 1 with a 35.38 clocking at the TCNJ Indoor Open. At the Wagner meet, he posted a 34.92 clocking to beat a field of 41 athletes. He also finished first of 25 in the 60-meter dash (6.95) and ran on the record-setting sprint medley team that finished third of nine in a time of 3:42.16. The old program record of 3:48.71 also was set at the Dec. 9, 2016 Wagner meet. Dobbins teamed with freshman
Desmond Howell, sophomore
Vinny Maine and senior
Tom Meyer on the record-setting team.
The men also saw another record fall for the second time in a week. Senior
Andrew Kustera finished third of 22 athletes with a shot put of 14.88 meters, taking down his old mark of 14.87 meters set at the Dec. 1 TCNJ Indoor Open.
The Raptors' strong performance in the men's shot put also included junior
Jude Misko (sixth at 13.24 meters) and senior
Drew Harper (10th, 12.08 M) and freshman
Will Gross (16th, 10.57 M). That quartet also had strong performances in the 16-man field for the Division III weight throw, with Misko finishing second (15.52 M), Harper fifth (13.94 M), Kustera 10th (11.84 M) and Gross 12th (9.16 M).
Howell also finished fourth of 41 at 300 meters (35.93), while Meyer was 28th in that event (39.39) and fifth of 10 in the 60-meter hurdles (8.94). Freshman
Arian Redzepi placed 23rd at 300 meters (38.90).
In addition to Jones and the sprint medley record, the women's team also received another strong performance from junior
Nicole DeMarco in the shot put, finishing seventh of 13 with a 9.87 put. Henry finished 10th of 15 in the 600-meter dash (2:00.31), Gilmore was 24th of 31 at 300 meters (49.19) and Slater was ninth of 12 at 1,000 meters (3:34.40).
The Scarlet Raptors return to action at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Jan. 12, when they will compete in the Lions Open.
