Rutgers-Camden mourns loss of Gerstenacker

CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 1, 2019) – Rutgers University-Camden mourns the loss of Tori Gerstenacker, a standout student-athlete for the Scarlet Raptors, who passed away Saturday following an automobile accident.

Gerstenacker (Howell, NJ/Howell High School) played four seasons for the Scarlet Raptors' soccer team, three years for the lacrosse program and also competed in several cross country meets during her collegiate career.

A moment of silence will be held for Gerstenacker prior to the Scarlet Raptors' 7 p.m. home soccer game Wednesday at Rutgers-Camden Community Park. Condolences may be left at the Clayton Funeral Home site.

One of the most active and successful student-athletes during her time at Rutgers-Camden (2012-16), Gerstenacker was a four-year starter in the midfield for the soccer team, played three seasons with the lacrosse program and also ran in several late-season cross country meets.

Gerstenacker captured All-New Jersey Athletic Conference Honorable Mention during all four of her years with the soccer program (2012-15) and finished her career with 68 games played, tied for 17th on the program's all-time list. She started all 68 games and collected two goals and five assists for nine career points. She served as one of the team's captains during her junior season and notched her lone career game-winning goal in a 2-0 victory over the College of Staten Island (Oct. 26, 2015).

Gerstenacker was an immediate impact player for the Scarlet Raptors, starting all 19 Rutgers-Camden games as a freshman on her way to earning team Most Valuable Player honors. As a sophomore, she notched a goal and three assisted on Oct. 12, 2013 against Sarah Lawrence, one assist shy of the program's single-game record.

In addition to her standout soccer career, Gerstenacker played three seasons with the Scarlet Raptors' lacrosse program (2013-14 and 2016), where she is tied for 11th on the career list for games played (43) and tied for seventh in caused turnovers (35). During her first year with the Raptors, the team won six games, a program record at the time. They set a new program mark with seven wins during her final season in 2016.

Following soccer season, Gerstenacker ran in the NCAA Atlantic Regional cross country meets in 2012, 2013 and 2014, as well as in the 2014 New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship meet. She was part of the 2012 Raptor program that earned recognition as a Division III All-Academic Cross Country Team from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

A stellar student, Gerstenacker was a member of the inaugural Rutgers-Camden Athletic Director's Honor Roll during the Fall 2015 semester and repeated on the AD Honor Roll for the Spring 2016 semester. A Dean's List student with a double major in Psychology and Childhood Studies, she also was a member of the Rutgers-Camden Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

During her scholastic career at Howell High School, Gerstenacker earned 11 varsity letters, including four apiece in winter and spring track and three in soccer. She served as the soccer team captain and also was a member of the National Honor Society.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorial donations be made to the Rutgers University Foundation in support of the Rutgers-Camden Women's Soccer Program.
