CAMDEN, N.J. (March 30, 2019) –The Rutgers University-Camden men's tennis team swept every match as it gave first-year Head Coach
Matt Geiser his first collegiate victory with a 9-0 win over Lehman College here Saturday.
The Scarlet Raptors improved to 1-3, while the Lightning fell to 0-6.
Rutgers-Camden freshmen
Steven Zhang and
Vincent Flores earned their first collegiate singles victories during the afternoon, with Zhang taking a 6-4, 6-0 win at second singles and Flores earning a 6-0, 6-1 win at sixth singles.
Sophomore
Matt Deak won his first singles competition this season with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at first singles. Senior
Vatsal Patel raised his singles mark to 3-1 this year as he captured a 6-3, 6-0 win at third singles and sophomore captain
Jose Vargas evened his singles mark at 2-2 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory in the fourth spot. Sophomore
Shariq Khan, meanwhile, kept his singles record perfect at 4-0 as he earned a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at fifth singles.
In doubles competition, Patel and Zhang combined for an 8-6 win in the first spot, giving both of them their first doubles victory of the season. At second doubles, Khan and Flores earned an 8-1 win, while Deak and Vargas combined for an 8-0 victory at third doubles.
The Scarlet Raptors were supposed to host Stevenson University Sunday, but that match already has been cancelled due to the weather forecast. Rutgers-Camden returns to action on April 6 when it begins play in both the New Jersey Athletic Conference and the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. The Raptors host defending GNAC champion Ramapo College at 12 p.m. The match also begins the rebirth of men's tennis in the NJAC, which hasn't sponsored that sport since 1983.
