ROXBURY CROSSING, Mass. (March 9, 2019) – Rutgers University-Camden senior sprinter
Cameron Dobbins made the most of his opportunity here Saturday and ended up as an All-American.
Dobbins finished fourth out of eight competitors in the 200-meter dash finals, posting a time of 21.95, as he competed at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Dobbins becomes the third indoor track All-American in program history, joining Frank Iwanicki in the 800 meters (2009) and Matt Curtis at 400 meters (2013). The Scarlet Raptors also have had eight male All-Americans and two female All-Americans during outdoor season, with the most recent being Curtis in the 400 intermediate hurdles in 2014. Tim VanLiew was a three-time All-American (2011, 2012 and 2013) in the javelin, including the back-to-back national champion in 2012 and 2013.
Dobbins, who will finish up his outstanding collegiate career during outdoor season, found a fitting way to cap his standout career indoors. Competing in two events during Friday's preliminaries, he finished 13th of 20 runners in the 60-meter dash, breaking his own school record with a 6.904 clocking. On Saturday evening, he originally was listed as ninth of 20 in the 200-meter dash, a position which would have missed by one spot of qualifying for the finals, but an athlete above him was later disqualified for running out of his lane, bumping Dobbins to the eighth and final qualifying spot.
Given the opportunity, Dobbins made the most of it by blazing his way into program history as an All-American.
The honor caps a huge senior season for the star out of Williamstown High School, which included the New Jersey Athletic Conference championship in the 60-meter dash and a NJAC Second Team honor in the 200-meter dash with a program record 21.67 clocking. He was named the Outstanding Track Athlete of the NJAC meet for the second straight year.
Dobbins finished his Rutgers-Camden indoor track career holding program records in the 55-meter dash (6.56), 60-meter dash (6.904), 200-meter dash (21.67) and the 300-meter dash (34.92), in addition to running on program record-setting teams for the 1600 sprint medley (3:42.16) and the 4x160 (1:19.30). All of those marks, except the 4x160, were set this winter.
