NEW HAVEN, Conn. (April 13, 2019) – The Albertus Magnus College men's tennis team won four of the six singles matches to pull out a 5-4 victory over Rutgers University-Camden in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action here Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons, who improve to 7-5 overall and 2-0 in the GNAC, extended their winning streak to five matches. It was only the second time in seven matches that they have defeated Rutgers-Camden, with the first coming in 2015.
Rutgers-Camden falls to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in GNAC play.
The Scarlet Raptors took an early lead when they won two of the three doubles matches. Senior
Vatsal Patel and sophomore
Adney Cardoza won at second doubles, 8-0, while freshman
Steven Zhang and sophomore
Jose Vargas posted an 8-3 win at third doubles. Albertus Magnus won the first doubles competition, 8-2, over the Scarlet Raptor team of freshman
Vincent Flores and sophomore
Shariq Khan.
Cardoza,
pictured above, completed his stellar individual day with a singe at third singles, 6-0, 6-1, while Khan won his match at the fifth flight, 6-2, 7-6.
In his first match playing first singles, Patel dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision, while Zhang lost at second singles, 6-1, 6-0. Vargas was defeated at fourth singles, 6-0, 7-5, and Flores lost in the sixth spot, 6-1, 6-1.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday when travels to Rutgers-Newark for a 12 p.m. match that will count in both the GNAC and the New Jersey Athletic Conference standings.
