Adney Cardoza earned his first collegiate singles victory and sophomore
Shariq Khan continued his season-long success in singles, but the Rutgers University-Camden men's tennis team dropped a non-conference match against the College of Staten Island, 7-2, here Sunday afternoon.
The CSI Dolphins improve to 6-1 with their sixth straight win, while the Scarlet Raptors fall to 1-5.
Cardoza earned a 3-6, 6-0, 12-8 win at second singles for his first collegiate win, leaving him with a 1-4 overall singles mark in his first year with the program (0-3 first singles and 1-1 at the second flight). Khan, meanwhile, raised his season singles mark to 5-1 (2-0 fifth singles and 3-1 sixth) as he posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory at the sixth spot.
Sophomore
Matt Deak dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision at first singles and freshman
Steven Zhang was defeated by a 6-1, 6-1 score at third singles. Senior
Vatsal Patel lost at the fourth spot (6-0, 6-1) and sophomore captain
Jose Vargas was defeated at fifth singles (1-6, 7-5, 4-10).
The Dolphins swept all three doubles matches, with Patel and Zhang losing at first doubles (8-2), Khan and freshman
Vincent Flores dropping a close 8-6 decision at second doubles and Deak and Vargas combining at third doubles in an 8-2 loss.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday when it travels to New Jersey Athletic Conference pre-season favorite The College of New Jersey for a 5 p.m. match.
