Raptors win their opener at Cialella Soccer Classic

CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 11, 2021) – Sophomore back Quincy Attobrah scored his first two goals at Rutgers-Camden to spark the Scarlet Raptors over Catholic University of America, 3-2, in the second game of the day at the Cialella Soccer Classic.
 
In the first game, SUNY-Cortland scored a pair of first-half goals on the way to beating Stockton University, 2-0.
 
The event was the 20th Cialella Soccer Classic, returning the Scarlet Raptors' tournament to campus after a year off in 2020 due to the pandemic. It is named after former Rutgers-Camden athlete, coach and Athletic Director Edward Cialella.
 
The Cialella Soccer Classic concludes Sunday. Stockton will play Catholic at 2 p.m., followed by Rutgers-Camden against Cortland at 4:30.

The Red Dragons (2-1-1) scored a goals at both ends of the first half and went on to defeat the Ospreys (2-3) in the opening game of the Cialella Soccer Classic.
 
Midfielder Blake Aronson scored only 2:41 into the contest when a Stockton defender stopped a cross from the right side with a chest trap in the box. It fell to Aronson, who tapped in a short-range shot for his second goal of the year.
 
Late in the half, a loose ball and scramble in the box netted a goal by Mikey Lanzetta at 43:54, assisted by Mike Hunsucker.
 
Cortland held an 8-5 advantage in shots and an 8-3 margin in corner kicks, including a 6-1 corner kick lead in the first half. Cortland keeper Braden Melveney made one save to post the shutout, while Stockton's Dino Gromitsaris had three saves.
 
Rutgers-Camden 3, Catholic 2
 
The Scarlet Raptors (3-0-1) overcame a one-goal deficit on their way to the win in a game where they held a 14-9 advantage in shots, including 10-4 in the opening half. Catholic (2-1) held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
 
The Cardinals jumped on the board at 25:11 on the first of two goals by Darius Siahpoosh, assisted by a pass toward the right post by Paul Egan. Siahpoosh scored on a shot toward the left side of the net.
 
Rutgers-Camden tied the game at 33:06 after a Catholic foul gave senior midfielder Christian McCartney a free kick. He fired a shot that was blocked by Cardinal keeper Troy Young, but the rebound fell to junior back Frankie Knapp, who scored his first collegiate goal to tie the game.
 
In the second half, a pair of throw-ins by senior forward Khari Shepherd led to the Attobrah goals. On the first one, Young tried to grab the high throw in a crowded box, but dropped the ball. Attobrah tapped in the go-ahead goal at 51:01. The second one was finished off a Shepherd throw-in into the box at 55:04.
 
Siahpoosh notched an unassisted tally at 62:27 to make it a 3-2 game, but a pair of brilliant second-half saves by Raptor sophomore goalie Connor Smith helped to preserve the win. Smith finished with five saves. Young had three saves for the Cardinals, while junior Austin Coron played the final 29:24 without a save.
