CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 28, 2021) – The Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team spent most of the night hovering around the Stockton University goal in Wednesday's New Jersey Athletic Conference game.
It was the Ospreys, however, who managed to find the back of the net as they survived with a 2-0 victory.
Stockton improved to 6-4-1 overall and 2-0 in the NJAC, running its unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1), including four shutouts. Rutgers-Camden fell to 4-4-2 overall and dropped to 0-3 in the NJAC for the first time since 2001.
The Scarlet Raptors held a commanding 16-6 advantage in shots and an 8-1 margin in corner kicks, but were kept off the board with missed opportunities and the outstanding play of Stockton senior goalie Dino Gromitsaris. Named the NJAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, Gromitsaris made five saves, including several spectacular ones, and broke up numerous other threats.
Stockton, meanwhile, took advantage of one of its three shots in the first half. Only 4:04 into the game, junior forward Brendan Deal sliced right up the middle of the Raptor defense and drilled his fourth goal of the season past Raptor sophomore keeper
Connor Smith.
Late in the game, with the Ospreys hanging on to that slim 1-0 lead, junior midfielder Ian Byrne provided some insurance with a long shot from the left side, perfectly placed into the upper right corner. It was his second goal of the season.
Smith finished with one save for the Scarlet Raptors.
Rutgers-Camden returns to play Saturday with a 1 p.m. NJAC game at William Paterson University.
