CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 15, 2022) – It was a typical New Jersey Athletic Conference game between two sister schools and fierce rivals here Saturday afternoon. And when 90 minutes had expired, the Rutgers University-Camden and Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer teams finished in a 3-3 tie.
Camden stands at 6-7-4 overall and 3-2-1 in the NJAC, while Newark is 6-5-4 and 3-1-2.
In a game that featured two lead changes, a second-half rally for a tie and six yellow cards, Newark dominated the action at the outset. The Scarlet Raiders finally scored at 10:42 when freshman Jake Milne headed home a shot at the left post off a cross from the right side by sophomore Brandon Castro.
Rutgers-Camden was held without a shot until nearly the 14-minute mark, but when the Scarlet Raptors finally managed a shot, they tied the game. The work down the right side came from senior tri-captain
Christian McCartny, who sent a ball into the top of the box for grad student tri-captain
Liam Craver. Instead of attempting to shoot through the Newark defense, Craver deftly touched the ball off to the left side of the box for an open
Daniel Tittelmayer, and the grad student midfielder scored his first goal as a Scarlet Raptor at 13:44.
McCartney, who assisted on all three Raptor goals, became the first Rutgers-Camden player with that many assists since Connor Hurff had four assists against Rosemont College on Sept. 1, 2015.
Rutgers-Camden quickly moved ahead at 20:08 when McCartney fed senior tri-captain
Parker Solowey, who chipped a shot over Newark senior keeper Christian Andrach. For Solowey, playing in only his second game of the season since returning from an injury, it was his first goal of the year.
Rutgers-Camden added a third goal at 22:12 on a restart from the right side by McCartney. Placing the ball near the left post, it was one-timed into the net by junior back
Quincy Attobrah for his first goal of the season.
By halftime, Rutgers-Camden held a 3-1 lead despite being out-shot, 10-4.
Newark battled back in the second half on the strength of the NJAC's leading scorer, senior Franco Catania. Catania made it a one-goal game at 50:01 off a feed from freshman Eduardo Ribeiro, scoring at the goal line for his 13th tally of the year.
Catania struck again at 68:06 to tie the game, ripping a long shot from the left side into the upper right corner. He was assisted by junior Marlon Rodriguez.
Newark finished with a 16-10 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Andrach had four saves for the Scarlet Raiders, while sophomore
Sean Boen made seven in the Rutgers-Camden goal.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Wednesday with a 7 p.m. NJAC game at Stockton University.
