Delaware Valley men spoil Rutgers-Camden's home opener

CAMDEN, N.J. (Nov. 16, 2022) – The Delaware Valley University men's basketball team raced to a 16-1 lead out of the gates and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 71-55, in the Scarlet Raptors' home opener here Wednesday night.
 
The Aggies evened their record at 2-2, while the Scarlet Raptors fell to 1-2.
 
After falling behind by 15 points early, the Scarlet Raptors fought back to within six points (26-20) at the half. They closed that margin to four points (26-22 and 28-24) early in the second half on a layup by senior guard Jaymes Savage and a pair of free throws by sophomore forward Rich Santos, respectively. Two minutes after the foul shots by Santos, he hit a three-pointer to whittle by margin to only three points at 30-27.
 
Delaware Valley responded with the next six points and 10 of the next 12 points, hiking their margin to 11 points at 40-29. The lead stayed in double digits the rest of the way, peaking at 20 points (62-42).
 
Freshman guard Tyriq Toney-Bailey finished with 24 points to lead four Aggies in double figures. Freshman guard Justin Savage and freshman forward Rasheem Dearry both scored 13 points, while junior guard Marc Godly added 11.
 
Rutgers-Camden received 14 points from sophomore guard Jordan Trusty-Smith, while the Raptors' Savage notched 13 points and added game highs of nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Santos finished with 11 points.
 
Both teams finished with 36 rebounds, while Delaware Valley shot 24-for-54 from the floor (44.4 percent), including 7-for-20 (35.0) from three-point range. The Aggies were 16-for-28 (57.1) from the foul line.
 
Rutgers-Camden shot 22-for-54 (40.7), but only 2-for-15 (13.3) from three-point range. The Scarlet Raptors were 9-for-16 (56.3) from the foul line.
 
The Scarlet Raptors play another road game Saturday with a 1 p.m. non-conference contest at Bryn Athyn College. They return home Tuesday night at 8 p.m. to begin their New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule, facing The College of New Jersey.
