CAMDEN, N.J. (Nov. 19, 2022) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team outscored Bryn Athyn College by 10 points in the decisive fourth quarter as the Scarlet Raptors rallied to post a 63-55 win here Saturday afternoon for their first victory under new Head Coach
James Boney.
The victory lifts the Scarlet Raptors to 1-3, while the Lions fall to 1-2.
After building a 22-13 lead midway through the second quarter, the Scarlet Raptors watched the Lions finish the first half with a 15-4 run to take a 28-26 lead into the break. The Raptors trailed by as many as seven points (33-26 and 40-33) in the third quarter before forging back to a two-point deficit, 42-40, entering the final period.
Bryn Athyn scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to pad its lead to 46-40 before Rutgers-Camden stormed back with a 7-2 run. A layup and foul shot by senior guard/forward
Jalissa Pitts cut the deficit to 48-47 with 6:18 remaining and after she rebounded a missed Lions shot, she scored on a layup with 5:44 remaining, giving the Raptors the lead for good at 49-48.
Rutgers-Camden kept its run going, scoring nine of the next 11 points to open up a 58-50 lead. Senior guard/forward led that run with four points, while senior guard
Abigail Sampona notched three and
Jalissa Pitts added two.
After the Lions cut the gap to 59-55 with 46 seconds remaining, the Scarlet Raptors closed the game out from the line with two points apiece by
Jalissa Pitts. and junior forward
Carleigh Galasso.
Jalissa Pitts finished with 25 points and seven rebounds, while Blocker had 20 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Galasso tied her career high with 12 rebounds (matching the total she had against William Paterson Feb. 9, 2022) and added eight points, while Sampona notched five points, three rebounds and game-high totals of four assists and five steals. The four assists matched her career high, accomplished four previous times, while the five steals set a new career high.
Junior guard
Jania Pitts also added five points, while hauling down six boards.
In the second half,
Jalissa Pitts collected 15 points and four rebounds, Blocker had eight points and five boards, Galasso had eight boards and four points and Sampona notched all five of her assists and points.
Senior guard/forward Terrae Lewis finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds for Bryn Athyn, while sophomore guard Reilly Ward collected 13 points and senior guard Kearah Henry added 10.
Rutgers-Camden shot 19-of-55 from the floor (34.5 percent), while Bryn Athyn was 21-of-66 (31.8). The Scarlet Raptors, after shooting only 8-for-15 from the foul line in the first half, finished 24-for-35, led by
Jalissa Pitts' 13-for-15 performance.
Rutgers-Camden held a 49-38 advantage off the boards.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Tuesday when it hosts The College of New Jersey at 6 p.m. in the opening New Jersey Athletic Conference game of the season.
