CAMDEN, N.J. (Dec. 10, 2022) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team placed nine players in the scoring column, including three in double figures, as it defeated Rutgers University-Camden, 75-62, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday afternoon.
The Scarlet Raiders improved to 3-6 overall, snapping a six-game losing streak, and won their first NJAC game of the season, improving to 1-3. The Scarlet Raptors lost their sixth straight game to fall to 1-9 overall and 0-5 in the NJAC.
The teams changed leads five times, with the Scarlet Raiders taking the lead for good, 23-22, with 4:21 remaining in the first half on a jumper and a foul shot by senior guard Syncere Lambert. They stretched their margin to 36-29 at halftime. Newark increased its lead to as many as 16 points (50-34) in the third quarter before Camden rallied to cut the gap to four points, 56-52, early in the fourth quarter on a three-point play by senior guard/forward
Rahzirah Blocker.
Newark's senior forward Ebony Odom Barnes followed with a pair of layups to hike the lead back to eight. Newark raised its lead to 71-57 before settling for the 13-point win.
Lambert finished with 21 points for the Scarlet Raiders, while adding eight assists. Odom Barnes and senior guard Lourdes Marasigan both added 14 points and six rebounds, with Marasigan nailing four three-pointers.
Newark shot 28-for-62 (45.2 percent) from the floor, including 6-for-23 (26.1) from three-point range, and his 13 of its 21 foul shots (61.9). Camden went 24-for-59 (40.7) from the floor, including 0-for-8 from three-point range, and was 14-for-19 (73.7) from the foul line.
Camden held a 42-36 advantage off the boards, but also made six more turnovers (23-17).
Senior guard/forward
Jalissa Pitts collected her first double-double of the season with game-high totals of 28 points and 11 rebounds. Blocker added 25 points, seven rebounds and a game-high five steals. Senior guard
Abigail Sampona notched seven rebounds and four assists, while junior forward
Carleigh Galasso had six boards, two blocked shots and five points.
The Scarlet Raptors play one more game before the holiday break, traveling to Arcadia University for a 6 p.m. non-conference contest Wednesday.
