MONTCLAIR, N.J. (Dec. 3, 2022) – The Montclair State University women's basketball team placed five players in double digits as it defeated Rutgers University-Camden, 84-67, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday.
The win evened MSU's record at 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Camden fell to 1-7 and 0-3.
Rutgers-Camden has lost six straight games against the Red Hawks since its last win, 64-54, in Montclair on Feb. 13, 2019.
The Scarlet Raptors had several early leads, beginning with a three-pointer by junior forward
Carleigh Galasso to open the scoring in the contest. A jumper by Galasso gave the Raptors their biggest lead, 13-9, with 3:26 remaining in the first quarter.
Montclair State closed out the first quarter with 12 straight points to take the lead for good. The Red Hawks went ahead, 16-13, on a three-pointer by freshman guard Shannon Hughes.
The Red Hawks led, 48-31, at halftime and 61-45 after three quarters.
Senior guard Nickie Carter paced Montclair State with 22 points, while grad student forward Teresa Wolak notched 17 points and nine rebounds. Hughes scored 16 points, sophomore forward/center Olivia Vero notched 12 and junior guard Mahogany Worsley-Wooten scored 10.
Carter and Worsley-Wooten both had four assists to lead the Red Hawks, while Wolak had four steals.
Rutgers-Camden received 23 points from senior guard/forward
Jalissa Pitts, hiking her over the 800-point milestone for her career. She now has 812 career points.
Galasso and senior guard/forward
Rahzirah Blocker added 12 points apiece, while Galasso paced the team with nine rebounds. Senior guard
Abigail Sampona had four assists to tie Montclair State's Carter and Worsley-Wooten for game-high honors.
Montclair State shot 30-for-63 from the floor (47.6 percent), while Rutgers-Camden shot 22-for-53 (41.5). The Red Hawks held a 39-34 edge off the boards and forced 24 Scarlet Raptor turnovers.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Rowan University in a 6 p.m. New Jersey Athletic Conference game.
