Ramapo men top Rutgers-Camden to close regular season

MAHWAH, NJ (Feb. 16, 2022) – Freshman guard Peter Gorman scored a game-high 22 points to lead three Ramapo College players in double figures as the Roadrunners defeated Rutgers University-Camden, 73-61, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday night.

The game was the final regular-season contest for both clubs, who will move into the NJAC playoffs beginning Saturday. Ramapo closes the regular season with a 6-16 overall record and a 5-12 mark in the NJAC. It will travel to New Jersey City University for a first-round game Saturday at 3 p.m.

Rutgers-Camden will be the 10th seed in the NJAC playoffs after closing the regular season with a 1-20 overall mark, including 1-17 in the NJAC. The Scarlet Raptors will play at No. 7 New Jersey City University Saturday at 3 p.m.

Ramapo, which also beat the Scarlet Raptors, 73-61, in Camden on Jan. 12, repeated the same score on its home court. The Roadrunners scored the first 13 points of the game before junior guard Jaymes Savage put the Scarlet Raptors on the board with a layup 3:32 into the contest. Rutgers-Camden rallied back to take a 27-26 lead on a pair of foul shots by Savage with 5:38 remaining in the half before Ramapo took a 42-36 lead into halftime.

The Scarlet Raptors came out strong in the second half and surged to a 47-44 lead, aided by a tie-breaking dunk from freshman forward Brandyn Stafford and a foul shot by Savage. After several tie scores and lead changes, the Roadrunners took the lead for good, 54-53, on a jumper by freshman forward Shane Rooney with nine minutes remaining in regulation. They stretched that margin to as many as 13 points (73-60) before the Raptors closed out the game with a foul shot by Savage.

Rooney finished with a double-double for the Roadrunners, netting 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to add to the damage done by Gorman's 22 points. Freshman center Jordan Myers added 11 points for Ramapo, which shot 29-for-57 (50.9 percent).

Rutgers-Camden shot 21-for-48 (43.8) and was paced by 14 points from Stafford. Both junior guard Tyree Mann-Barnes and Savage added 12 points. Savage and sophomore forward Tristan Cornish grabbed seven rebounds apiece, while Savage added a game-high five assists.

Ramapo held a 34-29 edge off the boards.
