AUBURNDALE, Florida (March 13, 2022) – With travel problems hampering the start of their spring break trip to Florida, the Rutgers University-Camden baseball team had only half of its team on hand for its game here Sunday against Stevenson University.
Junior pitcher
John Kasper made sure that wasn't a problem.
Kasper tossed a three-hit shutout, striking out 10 without issuing a walk, as the Scarlet Raptors defeated the Mustangs, 3-0.
The Raptors, who saw their scheduled Saturday game cancelled when Friday's plane trip was cancelled, raised their record to 5-4. Stevenson fell to 4-12-1.
Kasper raised his record to 2-1 and lowered his microscopic ERA to 0.42 as he tossed his second shutout of the season. His biggest threat came in the third inning when Stevenson collected its first two hits to open the inning. He worked out of the jam with a fielder's choice, a called strikeout and a fly out.
The only other runners against Kasper came in the fifth inning, when freshman second baseman Brandon Perillo collected an infield single for his second hit of the game, and when Perillo reached on a seventh-inning error.
While Kasper was shutting down the Mustangs, the Scarlet Raptor offense wasn't faring any better against the first two Stevenson pitchers, seniors Matt Reich and Malcolm Edelin. Reich hurled six shutout innings of five-hit ball, striking out six. Edelin threw a scoreless seventh inning, allowing only one hit.
In the eighth inning, however, Rutgers-Camden finally plated its three runs, aided by singles from junior second baseman
Danny Vazquez and junior third baseman
Connor Van Dine. A pair of errors and a passed ball allowed three runs to score off junior reliever Patrick O'Farrell.
Senior designated hitter
R.J. McGettigan paced the eight-hit Raptor offense with a 2-for-3 game.
The Scarlet Raptors play a 10 a.m. doubleheader on Monday against Mitchell College of New London, Connecticut.
