CAMDEN, N.J. (April 26, 2022) – The Cabrini University baseball team scored four runs in the third inning and senior starter Mike Valerio threw one-hit ball for 5.1 innings as the Cavaliers defeated Rutgers University-Camden, 8-4, in a non-league game here Tuesday night.
Cabrini improved to 24-8 with its fifth straight win. Rutgers-Camden fell to 17-19 with its seventh straight loss.
Valerio allowed a run in the first inning on a pair of walks and a run-scoring wild pitch, but the Scarlet Raptors didn't collect a hit until sophomore center fielder
Auggie Uzdanovics singled to right-center with two outs in the third inning. The Raptors didn't get another hit until a one-out single in the sixth by senior left fielder
Garrett Warner.
By that time, Cabrini had built a 6-2 lead, with the Raptors second run being unearned in the third inning.
Cabrini, meanwhile, scored four runs on four hits and a walk in the third inning, with sophomore left fielder Zach Brook capping the rally with a two-out, two-run triple.
Valerio worked into the eighth inning when he loaded the bases with no outs on a walk, a hit batsman and a single by Warner. Sophomore Dom Marotta relieved him in an 8-3 game with the tying run on deck and wriggled out of the jam allowing only a run-scoring ground out by freshman pinch-hitter
Andrew Brown.
Marotta struck out the side in the ninth inning, with one walk sprinkled in the frame, to earn his third save. Valerio (3-1) finished working seven innings of four-hit ball. He Walked three and hit three, struck out four and allowed four runs, only two of them earned.
Scarlet Raptor junior starter
Jack Murphy (2-4) took the loss, working 3.1 innings and allowing six hits, two walks and four earned runs during an inning where he was pitching in the rain. He struck out one.
Cabrini finished with 11 hits, including a 3-for-5 game with one run and three RBIs by senior shortstop Gil Peralta and a 3-for-4 game with two runs and one RBI by junior catcher Christian Strickland.
Warner and Uzdanovics had two hits apiece to account for all the Scarlet Raptor hits.
