CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 11, 2022) – The second day of the annual Cialella Soccer Classic at Rutgers University-Camden featured a lot more rain than shots on goal. As a result, the Scarlet Raptors and Stevenson University men played to a 0-0 tie here Sunday.
Rutgers-Camden owns a 2-2-1 record, while Stevenson leaves town at 0-2-3. Rutgers-Camden went 1-0-1 in the two-day event, which was changed from a four-team tournament this year to single games on back-to-back days.
The Scarlet Raptors held a 10-6 advantage in shots and Stevenson had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks, including a first-half stretch with three consecutive corner kicks back-to-back-to-back.
The two teams combined for only one shot on goal – a second-half shot by the Raptors'
Christian McCartney that was easily saved by Stevenson keeper Kristian Slaby to preserve his shutout. Raptor sophomore keeper
Sean Boen earned his shutout without a save.
The closest the two teams came to scoring was early in the game. Only 7:28 into the game, the Mustangs' Joe Nicholson headed a shot off the top of the left post. At 17:20, the Raptors'
Michael Campbell headed a shot off the crossbar.
Midway through the second half, an apparent push down from behind in the box wasn't called on a Stevenson defender, so no penalty kick was awarded. Boen, Slaby and their defenses controlled the game the rest of the way in the scoreless tie.
The Scarlet Raptors play Stevenson University at 1 p.m. Sunday to wrap up the two-day Cialella Soccer Classic.
