CAMDEN, N.J. (Nov. 11, 2023) – The Bryn Athyn College men's basketball team rallied from first-half deficits as large as 13 points and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 82-68, in a non-conference game here Saturday.
The loss evened the Scarlet Raptors' record at 1-1, while it was the season-opening game for the Lions.
Placing nine players in the scoring column during the opening half, Rutgers-Camden held a 41-30 lead at the break. The Scarlet Raptors led by as many as 13 points on three occasions, 25-12, 29-16 and 31-18. Junior forward
Jordany Pierre led Rutgers-Camden's first-half surge with 11 points and six rebounds, while grad student guard
Javon Gordon added eight points.
After the break, it was a different story as Bryn Athyn scored the first nine points of the second half to slice its deficit to 41-39. Sophomore guard Will Little led the Lions' charge with seven points in the run.
After the Scarlet Raptors scored the next four points, to make it 45-39, the Lions started another run that put them ahead for good. Scoring the next 12 points, Bryn Athyn opened up a 51-45 lead. The Lions took the lead for good at 46-45 on a three-pointer by junior guard Jakir Hampton.
Bryn Athyn went on to build leads of as many as 16 points, on four occasions, with the first one coming at 65-49 and the last one at 82-66.
Hampton finished with a game-high 24 points, while Little notched 15, junior guard Jalen Jackson scored 13 and junior forward Jalen Parker added 12. Parker also completed a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds. Jackson, meanwhile, dished off eight assists.
Rutgers-Camden received 17 points and nine rebounds from Pierre, while sophomore guard
Jordan Trusty-Smith notched 11 points. Sophomore forward
Cherif Kanoute collected nine points and five assists.
Bryn Athyn, which shot only 36.67 percent from the floor in the opening half (11-for-30), shot 69.23 percent (18-for-26) after the break to finish 29-for-56 (51.8). Rutgers-Camden, meanwhile, shot 50 percent in the opening half (14-for-28) and 39.29 in the second half (11-for-28) to finish at 44.6 (25-for-56).
Bryn Athyn held a 38-35 edge off the boards.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Tuesday when they host Baruch College at 6 p.m.
