CAMDEN, N.J. (Nov. 29, 2023) – The Stockton University women's basketball team placed four players in double figures and overcame a strong start by Rutgers University-Camden to defeat the Scarlet Raptors, 63-50, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday night.
The Ospreys improve to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the NJAC with their 10th straight win against Rutgers-Camden. They lead the all-time series, 69-22.
Rutgers-Camden falls to 0-7 overall and 0-2 in the NJAC.
Behind the red-hot shooting of senior guard
Jania Pitts in the opening quarter, the Scarlet Raptors raced to a quick 18-6 lead. Pitts made three straight three-pointers, flipping the score from 4-2 Stockton to 11-4 Rutgers-Camden during the Scarlet Raptors' 16-2 run.
By the end of the first quarter, Stockton had clawed its way back to an 18-12 deficit and the visitors took the lead for good, 24-23, with 4:14 remaining in the second quarter on a jumper by senior guard Emma Morrone. Stockton led, 26-24, at halftime and the closest the Scarlet Raptors came after that was 28-27, following a layup and foul shot by Pitts.
The Ospreys led by as many as 17 points, 45-28, in the third quarter on the way to the victory.
Graduate student forward Trina Deveney-Bethea paced the Ospreys with 12 points, while sophomore forward Skylar Fowlkes had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Both Morrone and sophomore guard Brianna Robinson scored 10 points, with Morrone just missing a double-double when she finished with nine rebounds.
Stockton held a commanding 53-29 advantage off the boards and shot 25-for-70 (35.7 percent) from the floor and 11-for-14 (78.6) from the foul line.
Rutgers-Camden shot 16-for-45 from the floor (35.6) and 13-for-22 (59.1) from the line.
Senior guard
Rahzirah Blocker finished with a game-high 20 points for the Scarlet Raptors, including 16 in the second half. She also added seven rebounds and three steals.
Pitts tied her career high with 16 points.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Saturday with a 3 p.m. home NJAC game against Montclair State University.
