CAMDEN, N.J. (Dec. 13, 2023) – The Kean University women's basketball team placed five players in double figures, led by 26 points from senior guard Brittany Graff and a double-double from freshman guard/forward Riley Ahrens, as it defeated Rutgers University-Camden, 93-65, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday night.
Kean improves to 6-5 overall and 4-2 in the NJAC, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 0-11 and 0-6.
The Cougars jumped off to a quick 16-4 start, but the Scarlet Raptors whittled that gap to 18-13 by the end of the first quarter, with senior guard
Rahzirah Blocker scoring eight of those points. By halftime, however, Kean had opened the margin to 46-30 and the Cougars led, 66-45, after three quarters.
Graff added a game-high six assists to her 26 points, while freshman guard Gissel Gamble notched 20 points and a game-high five steals. Ahrens had 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for her double-double, while tying junior center Macy Seaman with a game-high two blocked shots. Seaman also added 12 points, while sophomore guard Maya Edwards canned 10 points and added eight rebounds and four steals.
Blocker finished with her fourth double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while adding a team-high five assists. Sophomore guard/forward
Taja Brown collected 11 points and eight rebounds, while freshmen guards
Bonnie Sellers and
Maniya Simon added 10 points apiece for the Raptors. Freshman forward
A'yanna Morton had six points, eight rebounds and the Raptors' lone blocked shot.
Kean shot 39-for-79 (49.4 percent) from the floor, while Rutgers-Camden went 26-for-67 (38.8). The Cougars held a slim 44-43 advantage off the boards, but also forced 22 turnovers by the Scarlet Raptors.
Rutgers-Camden won't return to action until Dec. 30, when the Raptors play a 2 p.m. non-conference game at Swarthmore College.
