Newark topples Camden in Rutgers women's rivalry

NEWARK, N.J.. (Dec. 9, 2023) – Senior guard Samiyah Horton scored 25 points and added six assists and four rebounds to power the Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team over Rutgers University-Camden, 72-60, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday afternoon.
 
The win snaps an eight-game losing streak for the Scarlet Raiders, lifting their record to 2-8 overall and 1-4 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Camden falls to 0-10 overall and 0-5 in conference play.
 
With the score tied at 2-2 in the opening quarter, the Scarlet Raiders went on a six-point run and eventually opened up leads of 11-3 and 17-7. They led, 17-9, after one quarter, but the Scarlet Raptors roared back behind the red-hot shooting of freshman guard Bonnie Sellers, who shot 4-for-4 from three-point range in the half.
 
A trey by Sellers with 5:10 remaining before halftime tied the game at 21-21 and Rutgers-Camden took a 23-21 lead on a layup by senior guard Rahzirah Blocker. The Scarlet Raptors expanded their lead to 29-23 before Newark stormed back, taking a 30-29 lead on a jumper by senior forward Ebony Odom Barnes.
 
Newark held a 32-30 lead at the break, with Horton leading the way by scoring 13 points. Sellers notched 12 points for Rutgers-Camden in the opening half.
 
Trailing by only 34-32, the Scarlet Raptors watched Newark score 15 of the next 19 points to lead 49-36 after three  quarters.
 
In addition to Horton, Newark received 12 points from Barnes and sophomore guard Sanaa Brodie. Senior forward Jaielyn Alston collected 10 points and eight rebounds.
 
Blocker finished with 25 points, four assists and a game-high 11 rebounds. Sellers had 12 points. Sophomore guard/forward Taja Brown collected eight rebounds and freshman forward A'yanna Morton had seven rebounds and eight points for the Scarlet Raptors.
 
Newark shot 40.9 percent (27-for-66) from the floor, while Rutgers-Camden went 18-for-59 (30.5). The Scarlet Raiders held a 45-41 edge off the boards.
 
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday with a 6 p.m. NJAC home game against Kean University.
