GLASSBORO, N.J. (Feb. 1, 2023) – The Rowan University women's basketball team scored the first nine points of the game and went on to post an 83-43 victory over Rutgers University-Camden here Wednesday night in a New Jersey Athletic Conference contest.
Rowan improves to 14-7 overall and 10-4 in the NJAC with its sixth straight win. Rutgers-Camden falls to 3-18 overall and 1-13 in the NJAC.
Rowan has won its last eight games against Rutgers-Camden and leads the all-time series, 60-17.
Guard Grace Marshall, a fifth-year player, scored five of the first nine points for the Profs as they held the Scarlet Raptors scoreless for the first 2:45 of the game. Rutgers-Camden finally broke that string on a pair of foul shots by junior guard
Jania Pitts, but Rowan continued its offensive outburst on the way to a 28-6 lead after one quarter.
The Profs led, 37-17, at halftime and 62-35 entering the final quarter.
Rowan placed 13 players in the scoring column, led by 11 points apiece from senior guards Nicole Mallard and Savanna Holt. Mallard also had five assists and five steals.
Sophomore forward Shayla Johnson had eight rebounds to help Rowan hold a 57-39 advantage off the boards.
Senior guard/forwards
Rahzirah Blocker and
Jalissa Pitts paced the Scarlet Raptors with 19 and 15 points, respectively. Blocker added 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season, while Pitts notched eight boards.
For
Jalissa Pitts, her 15 points hiked her career total to 1,038, moving her into 14th place on the program's career list past Andrea Fogel (1,037 points from 1986-89). The eight rebounds also allowed her to pass the 500-rebound plateau, giving her 501 for her career.
Blocker also passed a pair of milestones. The two-year Raptor letterwinner hiked her career total to 617 points, passing the 600-point milestone. She also passed 200 career rebounds, moving her total to 203.
Rowan shot 36-for-86 (41.9 percent) from the floor, while Rutgers-Camden was 16-for-60 (26.7).
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Saturday when they host Ramapo College in a 1 p.m. NJAC game. Prior to the game, Rutgers-Camden will honor its three seniors,
Jalissa Pitts,
Rahzirah Blocker and
Abigail Sampona.
