CAMDEN, N.J. (March 26, 2023) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's tennis team had the unenviable task of opening its New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule against the team that has won every NJAC title ever.
The College of New Jersey swept past the Scarlet Raptors, 9-0, here Sunday in the NJAC opener for both teams and the first tennis match of the spring semester for Rutgers-Camden.
Coupled with the fall schedule, the Scarlet Raptors dropped to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in the NJAC. TCNJ is 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the NJAC. The Lions' only two losses came against Division I Lafayette and yesterday against the nation's #25-ranked Division III team, New York University.
TCNJ is now 13-0 all-time against Rutgers-Camden and the Scarlet Raptors have never won a set against the Lions.
Freshman
Katie Moore was the most successful of the Scarlet Raptors, taking a pair of games at third singles in a 6-2, 6-0 loss. The Raptors also dropped sets at 6-1, 6-0 in the first singles (senior
Sarah Ahrens), second singles (junior
Samantha Hoban) and fourth singles (senior
Laurel DiStefano). In the fifth and sixth singles matches, freshman
Ashton Sirko and junior
Alyna Cabrera were swept, 6-0, 6-0, respectively.
TCNJ opened the day by winning all three doubles matches, including 8-4 in first doubles (Ahrens and DiStefano) and second doubles (Hoban and Moore). The Lions swept the third doubles match, 8-0, against Sirko and Cabrera.
The Scarlet Raptors host Bryn Athyn College in a non-conference match Friday.
