WAYNE, N.J. (April 19, 2023) – As the 2022-23 women's tennis is winding down, the Rutgers University-Camden Scarlet Raptors are gearing up.
Rutgers-Camden won its third consecutive match here Wednesday, capturing its first New Jersey Athletic Conference victory of the season, as it swept past William Paterson University, 9-0.
The win raises the Raptors' record to 6-8 overall, including four wins in their last five matches, and 1-3 in NJAC play. William Paterson falls to 2-8 overall and 0-6 in the NJAC.
Senior
Sarah Ahrens, who earned NJAC Player of the Week honors on Monday, continued her season-long stellar play at first singles, sweeping past her opponent, 6-0, 6-0, to raise her record at the first flight to 10-3. She set the tone for her teammates at second and third singles, as junior
Samantha Hoban and freshman
Katie Moore also posted 6-0, 6-0 wins, respectively.
At fourth singles, senior
Laurel DiStefano posted a 6-4, 6-0 win, while freshman
Ashton Sirko won, 6-2, 6-1, at fifth singles. At sixth singles, senior
Lindsay Hernandez, who joined the team this spring after an all-conference career in women's soccer, posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory. It was the first career NJAC singles victory for Sirko, Moore and Hernandez.
Ahrens and DiStefano combined for an 8-0 victory at first doubles, while Hoban and Moore won their second doubles match by the same score. At third doubles, Sirko and Hernandez notched an 8-4 win.
Rutgers-Camden will finish its busy week with a pair of NJAC matches Friday at Ramapo College (4 p.m.) and Saturday at home against Kean University (10 a.m.).
