CAMDEN, N.J. (April 22, 2023) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's tennis team completed its late-season rally by winning its fifth straight match overall and its third straight New Jersey Athletic Conference match here Saturday, qualifying for the upcoming NJAC playoffs.
With an 8-1 victory over Kean University, the Scarlet Raptors earned the fourth seed in the four-team NJAC playoffs. They will play a 3 p.m. semifinal match Wednesday at top-seeded The College of New Jersey.
With their victory, the Raptors evened their record at 8-8 overall and 3-3 in the NJAC. Kean closes its season at 6-6 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
Rutgers-Camden swept the three doubles matches to open the competition, with junior
Sarah Ahrens and senior
Laurel DiStefano posting an 8-1 victory at the top spot and junior
Samantha Hoban and freshman
Katie Moore winning, 8-2, at second doubles. Freshman
Ashton Sirko and senior
Lindsay Hernandez capped the doubles sweep at the third flight with an 8-3 victory.
Ahrens won her first singles match, 6-1, 6-0 and Hoban won, 6-3, 6-1, at the second singles spot. Moore captured a third singles win by a 6-2, 6-0 score. DiStefano lost a marathon decision at fourth singles, 7-6 (7-5), 1-6 and 7-10. Sirko endured a pair of tie-breakers to win at fifth singles, 7-6 (7-4) and 7-6 (7-2). Hernandez won her match at sixth singles, 6-2, 6-1.
