Rutgers-Camden women close season with loss to NJCU

CAMDEN, N.J. (Feb. 14, 2024) – The New Jersey City University women's basketball team held Rutgers University-Camden scoreless for a span of 11:35 between the end of the first quarter and most of the second quarter as the Gothic Knights pulled away on their way to a 100-50 New Jersey Athletic Conference victory here Wednesday night.
 
The victory helped NJCU close the regular season at 17-8 overall and 14-4 in the NJAC, clinching the second seed for the upcoming conference playoffs which start Saturday. The Gothic Knights will have an opening-game bye before hosting a semifinal contest on Tuesday.
 
Rutgers-Camden closes its season at 1-24 overall and 1-17 in the NJAC.
 
The Scarlet Raptors took their last lead of the game with 3:16 remaining in the first quarter, 12-9, on a three-pointer by freshman forward A'yanna Morton. Rutgers-Camden didn't score again until sophomore forward Taja Brown hit a layup with 1:41 remaining in the second quarter. That snapped a 29-point NJCU run, making the score 38-14.
 
New Jersey City University led, 38-18, at halftime and 69-30 after three quarters. The Gothic Knights hit the century mark late in the fourth quarter on a layup by junior guard Olivia Wooten. It marked the third time this season an opponent reached 100 points against the Scarlet Raptors.
 
Freshman guard Na'tori Postell paced 14 players in the scoring column for the Gothic Knights, netting 19 points. Junior guard Alaisha Mumford notched 17 points and senior guard Damaris Rodriguez, the leading scorer in the NJAC, added 11. Rodriguez entered the game with a 19.8 scoring average.
 
NJCU held a commanding 60-31 advantage off the boards, with senior forward Sarah Edmond leading the way with six rebounds.
 
Morton tied her career high with 17 points to pace the Scarlet Raptors. She had set her high with 17 points against William Paterson on Jan. 13.
 
Brown collected her third double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
 
Senior guard Rahzirah Blocker, who has one remaining year of eligibility due to the pandemic and is planning to return, notched six points to hike her career total to 1,114, tying former teammate Jalissa Pitts (2019-23) for 13th place on the program's all-time list. She passed Nelly Cruz, who scored 1,113 points between 1988-91. She finished the season three points behind 12th-place Tara Harris (1,117 points, 1984-88).
 
NJCU shot 40-for-87 (46.0 percent) from the floor, while Rutgers0Camden went 18-for-59 (30.5).
