COLLEGEVILLE, Penn. (March 24, 2024) – Sophomore left fielder
Jacob Watson became the career leader in stolen bases at Rutgers University-Camden, but host Ursinus College scored a pair of unearned runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to stun the Scarlet Raptors, 3-2, in a non-conference baseball game here
Sunday.
The win lifted the Bears to 6-10, while the Scarlet Raptors fell to 11-5.
Watson singled in the third inning and stole second base for his 55th career steal to set a new program record. He had entered the game tied with the mark of 54, set by Josh Kastrava between 1997-2000. Last season, as a freshman, Watson set the program's single-season mark with 33 steals.
Rutgers-Camden entered the bottom of the ninth clinging to a 2-1 lead, but sophomore first baseman Shane Beaver drew a leadoff walk against Scarlet Raptor junior
Daniel Robeson. Pinch-runner Brandon Sullivan stole second base and, one out later, junior second baseman Jordan Williams reached on an infield error. Robeson struck out the next batter for what should have been the game-ending third out, but a wild pitch followed to move both runners up. Freshman center fielder Barritt Ross stroked a two-run single to left field to win the game for the Bears. It was the only time Ursinus led all day.
Rutgers-Camden took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame when senior second baseman
Danny Vazquez singled, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. He scored on a single by senior designated hitter
Jack Murphy.
Both teams scored a run in the third inning, with the Raptors taking a 2-0 lead on a leadoff double by junior center fielder
Steven Shaffer, who moved to third on a single by Murphy. He scored on a double play grounder by junior first baseman
Diego Salazar.
Ursinus countered with an unearned run in the bottom of the third on a pair of errors.
Senior
Ethan Carpenter pitched six innings of four-hit ball, allowing only the unearned run while striking out three. Robeson (0-1) pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing two hits, two walks and two unearned runs. He struck out four.
Ursinus sophomore Dan Bass (1-3) picked up the win in relief of junior starter David Morgan. Bass worked five shutout innings of two-hit ball, walking three and striking out nine. Morgan pitched the first four innings, allowing six hits, two walks and two earned runs. He fanned one.
Murphy and sophomore catcher
Evan Carbone both went 2-for-4 to power the eight-hit Rutgers-Camden attack. Murphy's two hits hiked his career total to 98.
Junior left fielder Peter Balos went 2-for-4 for the Bears.
The two teams will play again on Monday, this time with a single game in Camden, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
