CAMDEN, N.J. (March 25, 2024) – Senior designated hitter
Jack Murphy ripped three hits, including the 100th of his career, and added three RBIs to power the Rutgers University-Camden baseball team over Ursinus College, 10-1, here Monday.
The Scarlet Raptors scored in all eight innings they went to the plate as they raised their record to 12-5. Ursinus, which defeated Rutgers-Camden, 3-2, on its home field Sunday, fell to 6-11.
Murphy collected an RBI ground out in the first inning, a single to center in the third inning and flied out in the fourth before ripping his milestone hit – a two-run single to center field – in the sixth inning. He added a double in the eighth inning for hit number 101. He added two runs scored to his total of three RBIs.
Murphy wasn't the only big bat in the 11-hit Scarlet Raptor attack. Junior first baseman
Diego Salazar went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs, while sophomore left fielder
Jacob Watson went 1-for-4 with two runs scored, one RBI and two more stolen bases, increasing his program career record to 57 steals.
Senior center fielder
Auggie Uzdanovics went 1-for-3 with one RBI as he inched closer to the 100-hit milestone himself. He now has 98 hits at Rutgers-Camden.
Senior second baseman
Danny Vazquez, meanwhile, walked twice, scored two runs and moved ever closer to a pair of program defensive records. Vazquez collected three assists to raise his career total to 322, tying for third place on the career list with Tyler Inkster (2003-06). He is only six assists away from the career mark of 328 held by Brian Jakubowski (2004-06).
Vazquez also participated in two more double plays, raising his career total to 77 and tying Matt Calloway (2003-06) for second place on the all-time program list. The record of 82 is held by Chris Jones (2016-19).
Amidst all the milestones and climbs up career ladders, the Scarlet Raptors received standout pitching from seniors
Chase Cooper and
Dustin Bellis. Cooper worked the first seven innings, allowing five hits, two walks and one earned run. He struck out four as he raised his record to 4-0. Bellis finished off the last two innings, hurling one-hit shutout ball with one strikeout.
Rutgers-Camden scored an unearned run in the first inning and added the eventual winning run in the second inning after Salazar led off with a single and Uzdanovics sacrificed him to second. Junior shortstop
Jose Correa walked and freshman catcher
Julian Gonzalez singled to load the bases before a wild pitch plated Salazar.
Rutgers-Camden scored single runs in each of the first five innings, plated three runs in the sixth, and finished the game with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Murphy's 100th career hit, a two-run single, and an RBI ground out by Salazar highlighted the three-run sixth.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. game at Swarthmore College.
