York tops Rutgers-Camden in non-conference baseball

CAMDEN, N.J. (March 7, 2024) – The York College of Pennsylvania baseball team scored four unearned runs in the top of the second inning to break a 1-1 tie and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 13-4, in a non-conference game here Thursday.
 
The loss drops the Scarlet Raptors to 5-3. York, which opened its season winning two out of three games at defending national champion Lynchburg College, improves to 3-1.
 
The two teams matched first-inning runs, with York scoring on a one-out triple by junior second baseman Gabe Trevena and an RBI ground out by graduate student center fielder Robby Elzinga. Rutgers-Camden tied the game on an infield single by sophomore left fielder Jacob Watson, a pair of ground outs that advanced him to third, and an RBI infield single by junior designated hitter Steven Shaffer.
 
York broke the tie in the top of the second with an error, a pair of walks and three hits. Trevena had a two-run double to make it 3-1 and junior first baseman Andrew Santarpia added a two-run single.
 
The Spartans padded their lead with a pair of runs in the fifth inning, including an RBI single by Santarpia, and an RBI double by senior right fielder Connor Pickle. York broke the game open with a five-run seventh inning, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring five runs. The Spartans were aided by five hits, a hit batsman, a walk and an error. Junior left fielder Chris Betler had a two-run single in the frame.
 
York added its final run in the eighth inning. The Raptors scored single runs in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings after their first-inning tally.
 
The Spartans collected 14 hits, including 3-for-5 performances by Trevena and Santarpia, who both collected three RBIs. Rutgers-Camden had seven hits, including a 3-for-4 day by senior second baseman Danny Vazquez, who added one run scored.
 
The Scarlet Raptors begin their spring break trip on Sunday at 7 p.m. when they play Ripon College (Ripon, Wisconsin) in Auburndale, Florida.
