#23 Ramapo sweeps Raptors in NJAC softball doubleheader

CAMDEN, N.J. (April 7, 2024) – The nationally-ranked Ramapo College softball team limited Rutgers University-Camden to eight hits and one run over 14 innings as it swept the Scarlet Raptors in a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader here Sunday.

Ramapo, ranked #23 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll, won by scores of 3-0 and 5-1.

The twinbill, which was rained out on April 2, improved the Roadrunners to 6-0 in the conference and 17-3 overall as Ramapo stretched its winning streak to 11 games.

Rutgers-Camden fell to 11-13 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

The Scarlet Raptors return to NJAC play on Tuesday when they play a 2 p.m. doubleheader at The College of New Jersey.

Ramapo 3, Rutgers-Camden 0

The Roadrunners posted a win in the opening game behind the combined three-hit shutout pitching of junior Marissa DiPaolo and sophomore Brooke Knight. DiPaolo raised her record to 6-0 with six innings of two-hit ball. She didn't issue a walk and struck out six.

Knight earned her fourth save with a scoreless seventh inning, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Raptor freshman Sammie Friel hurled a strong game against the powerful Roadrunner offense, allowing only four hits, two walks and two earned runs in six innings. Friel (5-4) struck out seven.

Ramapo scored all the runs it needed in the fifth inning, which opened with a walk and a fielder's choice that didn't yield an out. One out later, junior shortstop Katie Rygiel hit an RBI single. Senior first baseman Avery Bartolomeo later added a two-out RBI single.

Ramapo added its final run off Raptor freshman Anna Milillo in the seventh inning when Rygiel homered to center field. Rygiel went 3-for-4 with one run and two RBIs in the game, missing only a triple to complete a cycle.

Ramapo 5, Rutgers-Camden 1

The Raptors received another fine pitching performance in the nightcap as junior Lindsey Rodzon held the Roadrunners to only one earned run – and two runs overall – through five innings before Ramapo scored three times in the sixth inning.

The Roadrunners had three hits, including an RBI single from sophomore second baseman Avery Kontura, to produce a first-inning run. They added an unearned run in the fourth inning, aided by a pair of errors, before collecting three hits and three runs in the sixth inning. The big hit was a two-run double from fifth-year catcher Alexis Corra.

Rodzon (2-7) allowed 10 hits and five runs (four earned) in a complete game, while walking two and striking out one. Ramapo sophomore Kassy Stefanski (6-2) worked five innings of two-high shutout ball to earn the win. She struck out three.

Rutgers-Camden scored its only run in the seventh inning against Knight, sparked by a one-out pinch-hit single from freshman Alana Gannon. She advanced on a wild pitch and scored with a tag-evading slide on a single by junior left fielder Emily Dubiago.

Dubiago went 2-for-3 with one RBI to lead the five-hit Rutgers-Camden attack. She was one of three Raptors to collect two hits in the doubleheader, as sophomore second baseman Gianna Bauer and senior designated player Kamryn Kennedy had a hit in each game. Singles by Gannon and senior shortstop Meg Gray accounted for the other two hits Rutgers-Camden produced in the twinbill.
