CAMDEN, N.J. (September 4, 2024) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team applied plenty of second-half pressure in its home opener here Wednesday against Swarthmore College.
That pressure resulted in one goal, but it wasn't enough to overcome a two-goal halftime deficit as the Scarlet Raptors lost to the Garnet, 2-1, in a non-conference game.
The win lifts Swarthmore to 2-0-1, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 0-2-1.
Swarthmore broke a scoreless deadlock in the 25th minute after sophomore forward Charlotte Carleton stole the ball in the Raptors' defensive end and passed across the outside of the box to sophomore forward Ava Gizzie. Gizzie sent a high shot into the net for her third goal of the season.
It appeared that the lone goal would stand up through halftime, but the Garnet added a goal only 1:35 before the break on a similar shot from just outside the top of the box by freshman midfielder Celia Kanellakos. Carleton collected her second assist of the game on a cross from the left side.
After being out-shot, 10-4, in the opening half, Rutgers-Camden applied plenty of pressure after the break, with a goal by senior forward
Emily Owens slicing the deficit in half in the 55th minute. Her shot from the right flank into the far side of the net was assisted by senior midfielder
Alyson Petro.
Swarthmore finished with a 17-11 advantage in shots, while Rutgers-Camden held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Raptor senior goalie
Michaela Graham finished with eight saves, including five in the opening half. Junior keeper Lila Travers had five saves for Swarthmore.
The Rutgers-Camden women return home Saturday with a 5 p.m. non-conference game against the University of Mary Washington.
