CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 21, 2025) – The Rutgers University-Camden volleyball team went all the way to five sets for the 11th time this season, but unfortunately for the Scarlet Raptors, they lost the fifth set for the seventh time as they fell to William Paterson University, 3-2, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match here Tuesday.
Paterson won by scores of 18-25, 25-12, 25-23, 23-25 and 15-10.
The win lifts the Pioneers to 12-9 overall and 2-3 in the NJAC, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 9-14 and 0-6.
In the final set, William Paterson broke a 9-9 tie with a kill by junior middle blocker Sofia Zablackis, added a Raptor attack error and a kill by senior outside hitter Abigail Hayth before Rutgers-Camden countered with a kill by junior outside hitter
Sofia Granieri. The visitors closed out the match with a Raptor service error, an ace by junior setter Abby Houpt and a Raptor attack error.
The Scarlet Raptors won the first set, 25-18, as senior setter
Avery Ang collected three kills and four assists, while sophomore middle blocker
Gabby Gbolahan added three kills. With the score tied at 13-13, a kill by Gbolahan put the Scarlet Raptors head to stay and started a four-point run. Rutgers-Camden capped the game with a service ace by Ang.
In the second set, the two teams were tied at 2-2 when a kill by Paterson junior middle hitter Kristian Glenn put the Pioneers ahead to stay on their way to a 25-12 victory.
In the tight third set, the teams were tied at 7-7, 10-10, 11-11, 13-13, 14-14, 15-15, 16-16, 17-17 18-18, 19-19, 20-20 and 21-21 before William Paterson went ahead for good on a kill by junior middle hitter Laura Gruener. The Pioneers hung on for a 25-23 victory.
The fourth set also was a tight one, but this time Rutgers-Camden survived with a 25-23 victory, winning the final point on a Paterson service error.
Glenn paced the winners with 13 kills, while Houpt had 50 assusts.
Rutgers-Camden received another double-double from Ang, who had 20 assists and 12 digs, in addition to five kills, one ace and one block assist. Junior setter
JoAnna Andrews added 17 assists, while junior libero
Mia Owens collected 14 digs and two service aces.
The Scarlet Raptors received four blocks apiece from freshman middle blocker
Jana Jovanovic (three solo, one assisted) and freshman outside hitter
Asha Pensa Johnson (one solo, three assisted), with Pensa Johnson also leading the team with 13 kills.
Gbolahan also added three assisted blocks and nine kills, while Granieri and sophomore outside hitter
Taylor White had eight kills apiece.
The Scarlet Raptors play a 7 p.m. conference match at Rowan University on Thursday.
