CAMDEN, N.J. (February 25, 2025) – SUNY-Oneonta sophomore pitcher Emily Brown threw a two-hit shutout in the first game and the Red Dragons built a four-run lead in the nightcap and hung on to win, 4-3, as they swept Rutgers University-Camden in a season-opening softball doubleheader for both teams here Tuesday.
Oneonta opens its season at 2-0, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 0-2.
The Scarlet Raptors host SUNY-New Paltz in a 4 p.m. doubleheader Friday.
Oneonta 3, Rutgers-Camden 0
Brown walked five and struck out eight in her opening-day shutout. She allowed only one hit through the first six innings – a leadoff single in the third inning by Raptor senior left fielder
Emily Dubiago. Brown ran into a two-out jam in the seventh inning when she walked Dubiago and allowed a single by junior shortstop
Gianna Bauer. She completed her shutout with a fly out.
Oneonta scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings, with Brown helping her own cause at the plate, going 3-for-3 with one run scored. Her batterymate, senior catcher Julia Serena, went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Serena doubled home a run in the second inning and hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.
Oneonta 4, Rutgers-Camden 3
The Red Dragons scored a run in the second inning on an RBI double by junior third baseman Jaime Cardello. They added three runs in the third, two of them unearned off Raptor sophomore starter
Molly Skelly, as Oneonta coupled three hits with a pair of Scarlet Raptor errors. Sophomore shortstop Ava Thys and junior right fielder Cailin Hall had RBI singles in the frame.
Rutgers-Camden scored its first run of the season in the fourth inning after a leadoff single by Dubiago. One out later, sophomore second baseman
Madi Carr singled, setting the stage for a two-out RBI single by senior catcher
Kendall Lafferty.
Rutgers-Camden cut the gap to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Senior third baseman
Luci Hutchinson reached on an error and two outs later, Lafferty had an infield single. Sophomore
Devyn Jordan ripped a pinch-hit RBI single and sophomore right fielder
Kali Baker followed with an RBI single before Oneonta senior Angelina Scalere entered the game in relief to end the rally with a strikeout.
Scalere retired the side in order in the seventh inning to earn a save for freshman starter Tanner Smith. Smith worked four innings, allowing five hits and one earned run, while striking out one.
Rutgers-Camden received two scoreless relief innings from both sophomore
Anna Milillo (two hits, one walk and one strikeout) and freshman
Izzy Carels (no hits, one walk and one strikeout).
Serena, Hall and Cardello had two hits apiece in Oneonta's eight-hit attack. Carr and Lafferty both had two hits for the Scarlet Raptors.
