GLASSBORO, N.J. (April 14, 2025) – The Rutgers University-Camden baseball team ripped 18 hits and took advantage of six walks and seven Rowan University errors as it defeated the nationally-ranked Profs, 20-12, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference marathon makeup game here Monday.
The game was a makeup from the scheduled contest on Friday, which was rained out, and helped the Scarlet Raptors split their regular-season series with the Profs, who are ranked 20th in both the D3baseball.com Top 25 poll and the ABCA Division III Top 30 polls. Last Thursday in Camden, Rowan defeated the Scarlet Raptors, 11-2.
Rutgers-Camden improved to 20-10 overall and 5-5 in the NJAC, while Rowan falls to 18-8 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
In a marathon contest that lasted 3:45, the teams combined for 32 runs, 35 hits, 12 walks, eight errors and three hit batsmen. The Raptors' 20 runs and 18 hits were their biggest output since 20 runs and 23 hits in a 20-3 win over Rosemont on March 12. The Scarlet Raptors' eight-run second inning was their third-biggest output of the season after an 11-run first inning in a 15-9 win over York (March 6) and a nine-run fifth inning in the Rosemont game.
Individually, graduate student designated hitter
Jack Murphy went 3-for-6 with three runs and three RBIs, hiking his career RBI total to 136 to set a new program record. He passed the mark of 135 set by Jamie Schwantes (1994-97).
Junior second baseman
Frankie Romond went 5-for-6 with three runs and one RBI for his second five-hit game of the season. He went 5-for-5 against Gwynedd Mercy on Feb. 25.
Senior third baseman
Ryan Nutley and freshman left fielder
Ryan Joseph both drove home four runs, while senior center fielder
Steven Shaffer hit a solo home run for his third homer of the season.
Sophomore shortstop
Austin Dubler went 1-for-4 with three walks, two stolen bases, one RBI and four runs scored. Nutley and Murphy both had three hits, while Romond, Nutley and Murphy scored three runs apiece.
In the Scarlet Raptors' eight-run inning, both Nutley and senior first baseman
Diego Salazar hit two-run doubles.
Graduate pitcher
Jacob Shapley (2-2) picked up the win in relief of senior starter
Daniel Robeson. Shapley worked 3.2 relief innings, allowing four hits, two walks and two earned runs after Robeson pitched the first 4.1 innings.
Rutgers-Camden scored two runs in the top of the first inning on a two-run single by Joseph, but Rowan bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the frame. The Scarlet Raptors took the lead for good with their eight-run second inning.
The Scarlet Raptors will play a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game on Tuesday at Alvernia University.
