CAMDEN, N.J. (April 22, 2025) – The Rutgers University-Camden baseball program honored eight players here Tuesday on Senior Night and the Scarlet Raptors had plenty to celebrate as they defeated Centenary University, 10-3, in a non-conference game.
The victory lifted the Scarlet Raptors to 23-13 overall, while the Cyclones fell to 15-16-1.
Prior to the game, the Scarlet Raptors honored seniors
Chase Cooper, Ryan Nutley, Billy Richards, Daniel Robeson, Frankie Romond, Diego Salazar, Steven Shaffer and
Jacob Shapley, all of them departing along with a quartet of players who returned for their final year this season after celebrating Senior Night last year:
Giacomo Antonicello, Ethan Carpenter, Jack Murphy and
Joey Rappaport.
Rutgers-Camden built a 10-0 lead before the Cyclones scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning. The Scarlet Raptors took the lead for good in the bottom of the first inning when Romond led off with an infield single, Shaffer walked and Murphy hit a one-out RBI single.
In the second inning, an error and a two-out, two-run home run by Romond plated a pair of unearned runs.
The Scarlet Raptors broke the game open in a four-run third inning, which started with the 46th career double by Murphy, tying the program's career record set by another Murphy, Brian Murphy, from 2001-04. Nutley followed with a walk and one out later, Antonicello ripped an RBI double. Freshman catcher
Mason Blizzard added a two-run double and after an error and a single by Romond, Shaffer hit a sacrifice fly.
The Scarlet Raptors scored a fifth-inning run on a balk and added a pair of runs in the sixth inning on an infield single by Shaffer. Freshman shortstop
Chris Smith scored the second run by hustling from second base as the Centenary first baseman made a stretch to hold the bag on a long throw from the shortstop hole.
Romond had a stellar game from the leadoff spot, going 3-for-3, including a home run, with two walks, two runs and two RBIs. Shaffer went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run and three RBIs.
