CHESTER, Penn. (Sept. 3, 2025) – The Rutgers-Camden volleyball team was facing long odds in its non-conference match here Wednesday at Widener University, but the Scarlet Raptors met the challenge and rallied to post their first victory of the season.
Rutgers-Camden roared back from two sets down to defeat the Pride, 16-25, 19-25, 25-14, 25-23 and 15-3.
After losing the opening two sets, the Scarlet Raptors jumped to a 13-5 lead on the way to a third-set victory. They fell behind, 8-2, 12-4 and 21-11 in the fourth set before mounting a big comeback, aided by a pair of six-point runs. They took the lead, 23-22, on a Widener attack error and, after the Pride tied the set at 23-23, Rutgers-Camden scored the final two points on a Widener service error and a kill by freshman
Asha Pensa Johnson.
The Scarlet Raptors scored the first six points of the decisive fifth set and scored eight of the final nine points to clinch their comeback victory.
The win lifts Rutgers-Camden to 1-3, while Widener falls to 0-4.
Sophomore
Gabby Gbolahan paced Rutgers-Camden with 15 kills, while hitting .480. Sophomore
Taylor White and Pensa Johnson both added 11 kills, while freshman
Jana Jovanovic notched six kills. The hitters were set by junior
JoAnna Andrews, who had 29 assists, and senior
Avery Ang, who notched 14 assists.

Mia Owens, meanwhile, collected 25 digs and five service aces.
Widener received 12 kills from freshman Gabriella Bottino, 19 assists from sophomore Campbell Chronister and 29 digs from senior Liz Barnes.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match at Swarthmore College.
